How does it even work? I feel like if I could understand the instructions better I'd be playing it more.

wow I did not realize how old the instructions are and look. You play this game trying to match colors and species onto three areas. Once it gets two suns at the top you have to play the other areas until their full. The rainbow penguin tile is a wild card and can be played to help place any tile. Once full press end your game and you get four tiles and some sp, unless you don't finish which gives you a certain amount I think 3, 2 or 1 tiles and a little sp depending on what place. You have to gain 59 tiles of all difference tile species. If you have twos of four tiles that you don't need you can trade them in for 1 different tile you don't have at trade tiles link. Once you have all 59 different species tiles go to Mysterious Stone Tile Tray link and a rainbow penguin tile will appear to glitter I think or show up at the bottom. You press that and it takes you to a game similar to the three area slots game, might have four areas. Only this time you play until you can't place any more tiles. Once you can't you press end game and it gives you a wooden tile you can put into your actual tiles case in games or sell in your shop(most of the time if you can't put an insane amount of color tiles together in that game the tile will most likely be a common wooden tile.
