Ever have a character that, despite your best efforts, totally trashes your ideas and does whatever he/she wants?

Please, come tell me your woes, because misery loves company.

I'm currently having an issue with a character I've had for a few years now. She was created here on Subeta with the core idea that in her universe, magic basically occurs through manipulating the energy from herbs and plants, etc. So in my head, she was living in this frozen tundra, but with a greenhouse. I started writing about her story for NaNo one year, didn't like how the ending played out, and abandoned the story for a while. I'm coming back to it now and realizing that her settling anywhere, let alone having a greenhouse, just isn't viable. Now she seems like a totally different character to me, and while her greenhouse-having counterpart lives here in Subeta, in her universe she'll probably never acquire anything of the sort. It's difficult trying to separate the two now, but if I want to actually finish anything, I'm going to have to figure out some way to do so.

Anyone else feel my pain?

My very first original character was a dragon. He wasn't a very fierce dragon, just a poor clumsy dragon that wanted to work at his own fast food restaurant. (How logical of me, but hey I was like 12) Anyway, here I am about 5 years later tying to write out his story as a human, because I can't write from an animal's perspective to save my life. I currently struggling with various things with his metamorphosis into a human, like half of his key characteristics don't even line up...

I feel your pain! xD

Half of my characters grow minds of their own...it usually ends up with me having tens of thousands of words I did not plan. and then I'm like "but this character was asthmatic, when did he becoming a smoker lurking behind the school?"

Oh geez, that's funny! But yeah, my characters grow minds of their own all the time, but usually not this extreme. I have to throw out solid chunks of my first attempt out... it's a bit saddening.

Usually when a character changes its mind on me, it's usually something small... like this particular character revealed she's gay, when I never had any intention on having anything resembling a love life for her. I still don't think it'll be included, but it definitely took me by surprise!

Most of my stories don't have romantic story lines, but they do have sexualities, which never really come into play. Which always annoys because I'm like "god, it doesn't even matter. even the main character isn't getting a love interest. stop being so pushy, okay?"

Half of it ends up getting thrown out. I got way overboard on NaNo, but then over half of it gets scrapped. And then I never do anything with it, so I wonder why I try at all

I never really do anything with it either, but I think I'm getting jealous... My mom just published her second book. :P

I've got plenty who are like that... some days I feel they take on a life of their own just to piss me off. xD I've tried so hard to write and change back stories and ideas to get these characters to function but in the end I just can't seem to do it. Most of my characters have been around for 8-10+ years, they are a huge part of my life and I love em but geez they give me the biggest headaches... I don't think they like change. :P

Thankfully things are starting to come together. The two are finally entirely separate characters. They might even meet at some point, though not in this book. And for once, I'm actually planning out how the book is going to go instead of flying by the seat of my pants. I'm quite proud of myself. :P

All of my characters have a mind of their own it seems. Thankfully most of the time they tend to listen to me but sometimes they take over. I can't say it's a bad thing because they tend to do the right things even if it's not what I had planned originally.

Right now I have this one character who my younger siblings love, he's the bad guy but he has more fans then the main "hero" does, that high jacked the first part of my book. I loved it and so did the few I've let read it so far but it was not how I planned it going at all. My plan for the first part before he took over was more clinical and detached but he made it more interesting xD

Though one person who read it didn't like the tone Cx

OK so I'm writing this story and I purposefully made two characters with the intent of making them polar opposites who hate each other's guts. They were meant to be lousy roommates who fight and bicker and eventually find their own little niches but somehow they ended up sharing great chemistry and I had to rewrite HALF THE DAMN STORY for those jerks. >:U

I hope this is not twisting the topic a bit. I usually have a story in mind before I write. I do have pictures of my characters as well (in Subeta my pictures are pets mostly from Adoption Agency). I have found from starting with plot first (the plot clicks in my mind as I look for pets to suit characters. Or you could say from characters chosen the plot evolves.) I have read your posts and it is certainly has its humorous side as well as being extremely frustrating.

I HATE WHEN THIS HAPPENS! The character in question for this topic actually was supposed to not like this one girl and now she kinda has a crush on her even though I never intended to even give her a sexual orientation oops?

I usually have a plot in mind too... guess that's what happens when I fly by the seat of my pants, eh?

~ The girl who has a kinda crush on this other girl might it be serious or maybe I was wrong about her being a nerd?

Mary - Yes it was meant for you. Well that is a surprise about her cousin marrying her. Is this the plot? or has the plot gone awry?

Side story, doesn't really have anything to do with the plot. :x She never really voices her feelings anyway, it was just kind of an observance on my part.

. Whew what a relief. So what is the next step in her life? I am starting to create a character out of Cheevee Chibi Keeto. Have read the Keeto page (SubetaPedia). Starting to collect 3 treasures so far purple jump rope and learning blocks. Cheevee has been given them as she was fascinated by these toys no longer played with by the only child of a doting Shadowood couple. The family have wished they hadnot given her the jump rope as it has been put to dangerous uses as Cheevee plays jokes on them. The blocks are a good thing as Cheevee is fascinated by letters words and reading. She is unusually smart and reads for hours to the little girl. The third item is pivotal to the main adventure - something magical (not apparent). Perhaps a plushie something that becomes alive being played with? Well this will wait as RW calls.
