I don't know if I am in the minority of this or not but I absolutely hate when people compare this site to Neo.

For example, when I look in the suggestion section of the thread and someone suggests a pet colour and someone or someones say "No thanks that's too much like Neopets." I just don't understand why something can't be here and on Neo as well? How I see it when someone says no and it's on Neo is like they're trying to tell me to go get a Neo account just so I can have that colour or pet or item or whatever... I honestly wouldn't notice if something was a copy of Neo or not.

I feel like we could possibly miss out on a cool colour or pet just because it "reminds me(you) of Neopets".

not doing something just because neo does something similar is bad reasoning o-o

following this logic would mean that no episodes of Family Guy would exist, because the Simpsons did it all before.

Because we want Subeta to create its own path, not rehash ideas from other petsites.

Like, the idea of a second zapper, but for minions only. That's far from a general idea, and it's not something I want onsite because it was already done elsewhere!

This applies to other petsites too, I don't really want things like FR's Scavenging to be put on site under a different name, or Misticpets ruin digging area, even if they're great ideas.

I understand about Subeta creating it own path and all but to just knock down an otherwise good idea just because it's been done someone else is, imo, a weak argument against it. If the only reason not to do something is because another petsite did it first than what's the point of Subeta being a petsite at all?

A good idea is a good idea. There's enough creativity on this site where an idea, no matter how unoriginal, can be workshopped into something great. (note: i am not referring specifically to a minion zapper ~ this is the first I've heard of it)

I'd rather subeta come up with new ideas than re-hash old ideas scavenged from other pet sites in general. That isn't to say that putting a new spin on an already existing idea can't work in some form or fashion on here, but I'd rather subeta or any pet site try to come up with its own original ideas first before attempting to use or incorporate variations built on an already existing idea that was created somewhere else.

That said, it's inevitable in general that there will likely be similar features on one petsite that are used in another especially since, in general the formula for pet sites is mostly the same across the board on most sites. There are going to be features that have some form of similarity with something else, albeit probably unintentionally and that's ok.

I agree. It frustrates me as well. Frankly, have these people been on each pet site? Just because neo is/was popular doesn't mean everyone on here knows what you're talking about. It's not like some ideas are particularly original, so to assume it's copying off another site is stretching it. I mean we have avatars that personally remind me of another site's and yet they still exist on here.

All that said, I can understand the fear that a site might start molding itself after an existing model, and lose its own identity. Nobody here wants an imitation of neo, or else we'd all be there already, not here.

But I do think a given petsite should only really be focused on being the best version of itself possible. Sometimes that's going to mean new original weird ideas, and that's great! I'm all for it. But sometimes (and I do mean sometimes) it's also going to mean taking tools that do what they do well and using them here. I think it's important to keep track of Subeta's identity and keep it unique. But discarding a tool (like the pet zappers or the battle system and so on) because it's been proven already to be helpful/fun/useful/whatever for a site that uses it is silly.

My biggest issue here-- with the whole "Baww no that's stupid neo already did it no no never" is that a lot of times things are creatively different but just because they're rightfully called the same thing people lose their shit and immediately hate an idea before even listening to it.

A huge one here, is pet colors. Like, Cherry. Apparently, Neopets has a patent on fruity named red and green pets-- even though their fruity pet has a name three sentences long + stupid seeds all over it, however people lost their shit and claimed we ripped them off... because they did it first.

There's a few color "names" they have coined that I would give a lung to see on subeta because I KNOW our artists could do so much more with them-- namely, Faerie (no, not Fairy), and Ghost. Mythical lore faeries are fucking evil and come in every shape and form (some are beautiful, and some are hideous-- like trolls, ogres, and goblins) and I would absolutely love to waste an entire afternoon one day finding references for a board but it's a 100% waste of time people HOLY SHIT NO NEOPETS HAS A FAIRY PRINCESS TINKERBELL COLOR THEY DID IT FIRST BAWWW RAGE RAEG RAGE THIS IDEA IS AWFUL GO BACK TO NEOPETS NEWB -eyerolls- And a specter pet that's like anti-nightmare (solemn, knowing, longing... pale colors of the common versions?? yeaaaHh) but people would lose their shit over such a mention.

That's what annoys me.

I can understand some things (like the petpet/minion zapper-- or idk, royalty pets or something, or haha I have no idea I haven't been there in many years.. a space station?) but pet colors just... hng.

Honestly, I'm surprised no one is having a shitfit over the fact that our pets and their pets are pretty similar as is. OMG. SNAKE WITH WINGS. NEOPETS HAD IT FIRST. or DARGUNS? NEO HAS THOSE. NO DERGUNZ ON SUBETA!!!

Just throwing it out there that legal/copyright issues can be at play, too. Subeta probably doesn't want to copy something from another pet site too closely for legal reasons.

I agree with absolutely. Just coz someone did something first doesn't mean it can't be improved upon. It's the difference between inventing and innovating. Both are good and valid methods of furthering ideas. One just takes a previous idea and adds to it. As long as Subeta makes that idea better then there's no reason that it shouldn't do it.

The whole copyright thing definitely would be an issue in some things but there are things that Neopets (or any other petsite) just can't own. Like the Strawberry colour of pet. Just like Subeta wouldn't be able to claim the sole right to use a Cherry colour of pet. It would be like Cadbury trying to trademark their shade of purple.

But seriously, this is the exact reason Marapets filters out the word 'Neopets' on their forums.

I am on both sites but i have to say i like the pets on subeta best. On neo i have mainly draiks xD atm on subeta my fav pet is the Noktoa and i would LOVE an eventide or faerie Noktoa but i dont see that happening xD but i do understand that there are probably legal reasons
