In the past couple years I have discovered a love for dystopian and apocalyptic stories, and alternate-history novels. I adore Hunger Games, Maze Runner, and Ally Condie's Matched trilogy. Jessica Spotswood's Born Wicked (The Cahill Witch series) was awesome and I can't wait to read the third! There are so many others I've read and loved and can't get to right now because my kindle isn't charged, lol

But I want to read more! I have the third Cahill Witch book on order from the library, but it's inter-library so it'll take a while. Anyone have any suggestions of books I should read? They don't have to be teen, adult is fine too.

Have you read the Uglies, Pretties, Specials series? I was about to try and explain what it's about but I didn't really know where to start. But it's great. I loved it just as much as the Hunger Games series.

Thank you!

Heh, just now re-reading Ready Player One by Ernest Cline, a virtual world/dystopian world race for the future of humanity. Very enjoyable and genuinely had me on the edge of my seat several times.

As for alt history sort of series, I liked the Domination of the Draka series by S.M. Stirling.

I enjoyed The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood.

I also enjoyed the other books you mentioned, but I haven't read or even heard of the Cahill series so now I'm going to go see if those are available through my local library for Kindle. :)

YES! That's one of my favorites too!!

Ready Player One, I will have to try that, thanks! OH! That reminds me though, there's another series by S.M. Stirling that I really liked, but I can't remember the name of it. It was about an apocalypse...but I will try the Draka one too!

You'll love the Cahill series. So unique and good! I've heard of Handmaid, but haven't read it yet. adds it to list

Two really good dystopian novel series I really like are Red Rising by Pierce Brown. The second book just came out in the beginning of the year but I haven't had a chance to read it yet. The other is called The Reckoners. I believe the second book just came out for that one as well.

I loved The Hunger Games series and I really like the Divergent series until the last book. I would like to read the Maze Runner but I don't have a lot of time at the moment because of school

Battle Royale by Koushin Takami is one of my all-time favourites. SO GOOD.

The Giver by Lois Lowry is of course a must-read (heck, read the whole quartet--it's lovely).

If you're interested in classic utopia, you could go with Brave New World by Aldous Huxley.

And I'll also second Ready Player One by Ernest Cline. I just bought it in hardcover for my birthday since it was one of my top three favourite reads last year. It's really fun.

It's such a cliche but I LOVE Orwell's 1984. I had to re-read it last semester for a political linguistics class, and the subtlety and mastery that Orwell used in writing it absolutely blew me away.

Oryx and Crake, The Year of the Flood, and MaddAddam by Margaret Atwood. The Year of the Flood is my favorite and I thought MaddAddam wasn't as strong as the other two, but man do I LOVE the world and the characters in that trilogy.

Also, supposedly it's being adapted as an HBO series but there hasn't been any news on it for a while. :( plz darren aronofsky give it to meeeeee

I second 1984, Brave New World, The Giver, and A Handmaid's Tale. All great "classic" dystopian literature.

Adding:

Animal Farm - also by Orwell, more amusing (in a dark way of course) because it's about animals on a farm

Fahrenheit 451 - Surprised no one mentioned this, because it's absolutely amazing; it's set in a world where owning books is illegal (the title is the alleged temperature at which books auto-ignite) and fire fighters no longer put out fires, but cause them. Kind of scary how well Ray Bradbury predicted some technologies considering this book was written in the 1950s. Major props to this man. This is a must read for any dystopian fan imo.

The Time Machine by H. G. Wells

Lord of the Flies by William Golding

The Machine Stops by E. M. Forster - nice short story

Wikipedia has a compilation of dystopian lit by decade here, which I really love. Super organized and handy. :3
