As in, really little kid books? For me, I always loved to read most of the Eric Carle books, along with Dr.Seuss' and Richard Scarry's books.

Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus! (or any variant of that). They are so much fun to read to kids. Right now the kids at my preschool love Pete the Cat books. They love the songs that come with the story!

It's funny that most of my favorite children's books are ones I read in adulthood. I really love A. A. Milne's works, like Winnie the Pooh. Strega Nona is one of my fav. picture books. Dr. Suess gives me nightmares. :P

The moomins are wonderful. I haven't been able to read the chapter ones, but the picture books are adorable. I'd really like to watch a few episodes from the series.

Have you read any of his other works like Knuffle Bunny? That book is too cute. Edit: Sorry for the double ping. Do you work in a preschool? I currently substitute teach. Pre-school is so much fun to work with. I like how that age group doesn't pay much mind to gender roles. They are so silly and free.

Yes! Knuffle Bunny is adorable. I work at a private school/day care that goes from 2 years up to 5th grade. I think Kindergarten is my favorite age - old enough to be pretty much independent but young enough not to argue with the teacher HAH. But they're all great.

We recently got a new book on our shelves called "A Bad Case of Stripes". Also a great book with incredible artwork! David Shannon is pretty great; The "No, David" books are hilarious!

I was obsessed with Amelia Bedelia by Peggy Parish when I was super small. The original 1963 book. I just recently discovered that there are others.

I also loved the Little Critter series by Mercer Mayer as well as the Look and Find series. I have fond memories of a few books that I lost over the years including Pigsty by Mark Teague and Ten in the Bed by Penny Dale. They were fun and so beautifully illustrated.

A new favourite of mine is The Velveteen Rabbit that I read for the first time last year. Gave me such an ugly cry.

That's awesome that you get to work with a lot of different age-groups. I've never subbed for kindergarten. It sort of frightens me since the schools here only have one teacher (no helpers) in that grade; yet the kids need a lot of individual attention. I do think they're very sweet though. And elementary aged children are really great in general because they looooove following rules. Ha. :P

I'm not too familiar with David Shannon, but "A Bad Case of Stripes" was so adorable! The art was fantastic.

Seconding Richard Scarry :) I have fond memories of my dad reading "Cars and Trucks and Things That Go" to my brother and me, and searching for Gold Bug.

I also loved books by Leo Lionni, like "Alexander and the Wind Up Mouse" and "Fish is Fish."

I always loved Beatrix Potter's books, especially The Tale of Two Bad Mice. My other favourite children's authors/illustrators are Eric Carle (The Very Quiet Cricket), Tomie dePaola (Strega Nona), Jan Brett (Hedgie's Surprise), Kevin Hankie (Chrysanthemum), and Alexandra Day (Good Dog, Carl).

The Velveteen Rabbit was a tear-jerker for me as a kid.

Then I pretty much like anything by Eric Carle, more because of the art style than the actual subject matter. The style is so distinctive that even if you don't know specifically who wrote/illustrated the book, you still know it's the same guy doing it. Simply seeing his books brings me back to my childhood and gives me the warm and fuzzies.

My mum works in kindergarten and she looooooves Pete the Cat. Her friend had a kid last year and she's already bought him ALL the Pete the Cat books.

I love Bill Peet's books, they're the perfect combination of colourful and crazy for kids.
