I like to take a break from whatever I'm reading around Halloween for a horror book. In the past year the horror books I've read were Something Wicked This Way Comes, Gerald's Game, Misery, Joyland, and Pet Sematary. None of them did much to scare me. Anyone have a suggestion for this Halloween?

My favorite Stephen King book is, hands down, Cujo.

I was an idiot and read the last 50 or so pages right before bed. Usually I can read a King book with no problem before bed but the ending of Cujo is O.O

It's the reason I love it and am afraid to read it again (if you've seen the movie, the movie doesn't have the same ending as the book).

Thanks for the suggestion! I have quite a few King books on my to-read list, so I'm never certain which to tackle next. I haven't read or seen Cujo, and all I know about it is that it's about a dog. I think. I generally find it better to go in with no expectations :) It looks like all the copies at my library are checked out right now, but I put it on hold, so hopefully I should be reading that later this month!!

The best scary book that I've read is "The Taking" by Dean Koontz. Very War of the Worlds. Last year I gave it to my partner's mother for Halloween. She enjoyed it as well.

Cujo is a good suggestion!

Tell me what you think about it when you do get to reading it =D

If I knew you in real life and you lived by me I'd let you borrow my copyXD

It's not exactly a traditional horror book, but last year I read White is for Witching by Helen Oyeyemi around Halloween, and I loved it. It's kind of eerie and strange, but not scary.

Joe Hill's Horns is another book I'd recommend, but it's not that scary either... just interesting and quite fitting for Halloween. They released a movie of it this month, I think.

White is for Witching looks quite good, I put that one on hold. Thanks for the suggestion!

I haven't personally read it, but there's a book for The Exorcist if you'd be interested in giving that a try.

Check out House of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski. It can be difficult to read it all at once (you'll see why if you pick it up) but it's one of my absolute favorite books.

I've heard good things about House of Leaves; it's also on my to-read list. I'm afraid it may have too long of a holds list to get to me by Halloween, but I'm trying anyway.

I'm reading Horns by Joe Hill at the moment. It's good but not all that scary. Heart-shaped Box by the same author was a bit more scary. You can tell he's trying hard to imitate he's dad in it though.

My suggestions would be: The Woman in Black by Susan Hill Off Season by Jack Ketchum Rosemary's Baby by Ira Levin The Shining, The Mist, Breathing Method... basically anything by Stephen King XD I found Cujo uncomfortable to read rather than scary. It hit a bit close to home for me I think.

I recommend these for their chilling moods: The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfield The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo by Stieg Larsson The Little People by John Christopher
