As of today I had 10 pets. So it says I am using 10 pets out of 7 slots. However, I then used the Loyalty Box and gave myself a new spot for a pet.

Afterwards, when I go to create a pet it won't let me do that. Instead it's saying that I already have 7 pets and am not allowed one, despite that I have used the Loyalty Pet Space item. Therefore my Loyalty box has gone to waste and I am unable to make use of it. Please help me!

You have to have a GA active to get more than 5 pets. Even to fill slots from a Loyalty Box.

If I activate my account now, will that work?

It should. It will then say you're using 10 out of 12 slots, letting you get two more pets. :)
