So I am curious about what can and cant be done with tights and see through items of similarity. I am guessing most are just set to a low opacity, but some almost seem to be soft shaded? Is there a rule on them about this, or like with bgs not always needing a ton of thick line art is this more lenient with this type of item?
Is there a need for actual shading? Or can you just do a flat color and make it trasnp?
A lot of Cw tights like these I looked at closely: are just a flat color with only one bit of line art at the waist and some cutouts. (1 color?) Also flat with some cutouts, just slight shading. (3 colors?) are just very simply shaded (looks like maybe 3-4 colors?) Seem soft shaded, and on top have a color for shading. (1-2 colors?) It looks like just a transp pattern with little shading? (1 and some cutout?) Again transp, just a few colors for shading (3 colors?) Its hard to see on these as the pattern has many colors. But other than that It doesnt seem shaded other than at the waist?
Im sure on some its just hard to see the shading, but I dont want to add a ton of shade to it when its not needed. As I prefer tights like the above for layering purposes. Some of these dont even seem to have much of line art when I check them on sai with a bright color behind them.
Any help would be amazing! And is there a template for tights? Or do people just use the bases lines as a idea for its shape? Are they required to have line art anyway?
Any help guys? I am pretty stuck on this. (sorry it pinged a few times. IHU new forum ping issues)
Imma answer you because I feel bad about you not getting any answers yet. ;O; Even though I am not an artist and have no clue lol....
I think you can make them as shaded or not shaded as you like. Like you said, there are so many examples of tights that it depends on what you're going for. Really, the only line-art I see is the one surrounding the legs and feet if that is what you mean. That being said, the tights I submitted were denied only for stray pixels and they did have shading on them, so I can't say what is not enough.
Another example for you:
Looks a bit pixely to me in that the white scales aren't shaded (??), but I don't think the point was for them to stand on their own, so they probably look better layered with other tights. c;
Basically, you should totally go for making tights. :P Although idk what we're still missing since it seems like cws got a lot of things covered. xD
hi! The staff is usually pretty lenient on the number of layers - I've seen people doing one flat color + one layer of shadows, other putting 4-5 layers of shading.
I personally shade the tights the same way as the actual leg, which is base > first shadow > second shadow > faint backlight > optional highlights if I want the tights to be a bit shinier

I then increase or decrease the opacity of each shadow layer to make sure it isnt too contrasted. All in all, the choice of adding more layers only depends on the depth you want your stockings to have overall. Once layered over/under, part of it disappears, so the shadows will help define the leg better (if this is what you want of course)
