I recently moved to a new house in London which - when we viewed it - was fantastic, and somehow by the time we moved in was completely trashed. Granted, there were a couple holes in the walls we failed to see because they were (conveniently) covered by furniture, so maybe we should have looked harder. But the previous tenants also left all kinds of junk and cigarette butts and drug tests and nails and socks and one motorcycle helmet (?) and a baaaad bad smell. Oh yeah, and they failed to mention that one of the toilets is rotten! We pulled a worm out from the ground just under it! But I guess this is where I live now.

Anyway, now I'm over it and we've spent several days cleaning and angrily emailed the landlord, I just find it kinda funny. What's the worst place you've ever moved to / worst landlords agents or tenants you've ever encountered? If your story is particularly bad, it might make me feel better ;)

- I went to view a place. The landlord hadn't been there since the previous tenant had moved out. There were milk cartons filled with what looked like urine all over the place. The shed was full of weird stuff as well--including a moldy 10-gallon drum which apparently had once contained cocoa powder. In the fall we discovered the black mold problem.

The landlord I had was really a case of (semi-) benign neglect, though. There was a landlord in town who had folks making meth in some of his units. When those tenants left (were evicted?), he put cedar shavings around the place to hide the smell. The poor students who moved in suffered serious health issues as a result.

hoooly shit that's not nice! i assume you didn't take that house? our freezer was turned off and full of rotten meat so that was great, big thanks to the previous tenants 😒

and that's horrible, i know a lot of students who get sick as a result of badly kept housing but never under such dramatic circumstances! you'd think landlords would take better care of places they owned. it's really sad!

I'm about to move with my parents, probably the first week of November, maybe the last week of October. We just viewed the house again today and finally decided it was the one we wanted. I'm happy that we finally decided, lol, but I'm hoping nothing comes up wrong with the inspection (either the one on the new place or the one on our house now) that will prevent us from moving. I'm excited because we'll be moving back to my hometown where my friends are.

I totally thought this topic was going to be about renting horror MOVIES since Halloween is coming up, bahaha! :) :) It's only halfway through September and already I am thinking of Halloween/Morostide. :F

As for the actual topic at hand, I've been fortunate enough to not find horrific things inside any of the things I've ever rented --- dorm rooms, mostly, and cars, although my dad bought a truck that was in a bit more rough a condition than he originally thought.

Those are some nasty stories y'all have, though.. it's one thing to have had gross previous tenants, but for the landlord to be "in on it" like in the case with ? No sir! :(

Ahhh lucky you! i'm hoping for a day i move into rented/student housing and it's not disgusting. my last house was a mess too, and i had to move in a week later than convenient because the landlord was "getting professional cleaners in". shit was NOT cleaned!!

I've had my share of crazy landlords and weird places I've rented, although I have this one house the sucked out of the lot.

I rented this one place where the pictures on line were really nice, and considering I had to move across provinces to get to this place I had to trust the pictures. When I got there the majority was well, except for the fact that 2/3 bathrooms were unfinished, the backyard was missing a deck, garbage was left everywhere and there was an abandoned shed (which like everything else, was supposed to be finished) which had animals living in it. Now there were also issues with mould, and infestations but the landlord told me that he'd plan to come by and fix it for me. We agreed that if he took the months rent away while he was fixing the place, that it would be a win, win.

Week after week he said he'd come over and he never did. I finally started to look for places to live and I finally ended up moving. I only lived there for about a month.

that's so disgusting! i hate landlords that mess you over like that. it's so disrespectful and lazy. :-/ i wonder why it is that so many landlords are like that though. maybe it's just because i've only lived in really cheap housing so far but i've never met a good landlord!

at least you got to move in the end. was the new place in better shape?

Yes the place was in such good shape! A real difference compared with the old house.
