So, I've seen a lot of topics about adding friends to their pets. What is that for? What are pets' friends for? :<

It's mostly just for role playing purposes. Adding a pet as a friend creates a link to that friend on your pet's profile. You can also include a description when adding a pet as a friend. There are no bonuses to it.

Pet friends can be a lot of fun if you're into that sort of thing. For example, Liing here has an entire section dedicated to his ever-growing list of friends, and the friend description is actually each pet talking to one another.

I like it because it gives you a connection to other users.

Yeah, getting a pet spotlight-worthy can be rough. The worst is when you think you're ready, but your pet gets booted, and you don't know why!!

http://subeta.net/forums.php/read/6105 has free code for you to start with, but adding a background and such is up to you.
