I used to draw CIs on here forever ago, and I was curious as to whether the new custom wearables and such had seriously gotten rid of the demand. I haven't seen an art board for them any time soon, and I was considering opening one to sell arts.

But I mean, if there's no need or demand, what's the point.

Thoughts?

Yeah, ever since custom wearables have came out, it seems like selling CIs is not as common anymore. A lot of the good CI artists started making CWs intead.

But there's still demand; I saw an art board asking for several CIs to be drawn not too long ago. I'm not sure if they got any replies, however. And I think there are still a few artists selling CIs. But it's definitely a lot less common than it once was.

well, maybe i should look into making CWs then. i've noticed there is some serious money to be made there. or i could finally force myself to practice more and sell chibis or something. -shrug- I've also noticed that the cost of art has gone up A LOT. which is good for me i think lol. Your art, by the way, is GORGEOUS. One day I'm going to have to buy something from you.

Yeah, you can make a lot of CSC making CWs. I tried it for a little bit when they first came out. I got rather bored of it though (plus, I went on hiatus) so I gave it up for a while except for a CW contest. I might pick it up again though. And yup, there has been an increase in the cost of pretty much everything on Subeta. Lots of inflation. But I remember when 5 million sp used to be quite a bit to spend on art. Now, it's almost nothing, haha.

And thank you so much for the compliment!! I really appreciate it. :)

Oh you did cws? can you give me a few tips? I just came back off of a 2+ year hiatus so this is all SO new to me. i dont even know where to begin.

and I know! I used to sell my CIs for like.. 800k-1m or 2m depending on what it was... but it seems like now that would be at least 5m, bc i've seen simple chibis going for like 10m.

@ temper

It's been a while since I've sold CWs (some things might have changed) but I can try and help!

This thread is really helpful.

And also make sure to read up on all of the rules and guidelines: here

Making a CW pointers:

  1. Work from the full sized human avatar (in the link above)
  2. Have one layer be filled with black so you can see any stray colors
  3. Try to make the lines around the same thickness as the lines on the HA and make sure it's black
  4. Make sure the shading is consistent with the lighting on the HA
  5. Cell shading only (as opposed to gradient)
  6. Try to reduce as much quality loss when resizing as much as possible (this varies depending on the program, I know how to do this on paint tool sai)
  7. Make sure the background is transparent and it is png format

Since you have plenty of experience making CIs in the past, I don't think you need any pointers regarding that :P Just make sure it is 64 x 64, gif format with a white background.

Selling CW pointers:

  1. If you don't have all the CSC required to submit a CW right away, you can have others cover the submission cost:
  2. Make a shop in the CW forums showing off your potential CW and CI, with 10 slots for people to buy (1 reserved for you, 9 for others). The price will depend on what kind of CW you're making. For wigs and companions the total amount of CSC it would cost to submit is 5000 CSC. You can have others cover the cost of your own copy (unless you'd rather not keep a copy, then you can make it cheaper) and you also want to make a profit for your own hard work. Users tend to price their slots around 600-700 CSC for these type of CWs.
  3. It's always helpful to make a time-limit rule for payment so you're not waiting around indefinitely for users to pay up (which would be frustrating for you and the other users paying for the item)

After payment, you're ready to submit! If for some reason your CW gets denied, the staff will give you feedback as to what went wrong and what not. Just make sure to be direct with your clients/customers (?), do the required edits and it should be fine!

After a while, you should have enough CSC saved up to either submit your custom wearables directly to cash shop or submit it to the site and then advertise slots in the CW forums.

I really hope this helps, I might be forgetting a few things!

Prices have also gone up because sP has inflated over time. 100 CSC is hovering around 3.5mil sP right now.

Pet buttons and pixel art is also very popular now in terms of the market for small art pieces like CIs.

Welcome back to Subeta and good luck with your art. :)

I used to run art shops just to sell CIs, and interest for them has definitely gone down over the last few years. I've sold a couple in my current shop, but they were all for cw overlays that don't have a ci yet and not for the art itself.

Well I mean, I guess a CI is a CI, even if it is for an item.. but still. that stinks, that was my main means of getting sp lol

that's crazy. i remember buying 100 csc for like 900k to 1m. and i may have to look into pet buttons or something

There are some CWs with different artists for the item image and the wearable overlay. Maybe you could find a CW artist who needs a CI artist to collaborate with. Yeah, I think I remember buying 500 CSC with 3-5mil sP years ago.

Ehh I don't really advertise mine so that could be part of the reason as well, haha. I do pet buttons mostly, and offer other options for a bit of variety. Maybe you'd be able to drum up interest for them again though, who knows?

If you want to branch out, going all the way and offering overlays with your custom items shouldn't be that much of a jump. It's just a wearable version of the item image - same art style and everything. Clothing might be a bit harder but small accessories are a good place to start. c:
