Weird title (curse you character limit!) aside, I was wondering if anyone else had their manga/anime tastes change significantly from what they were at the start of their hobby.
Not going to lie, my first manga was BL, and first anime I watched all the way through was one as well. I used to devour stuff that now I would drop before getting to the second chapter/beyond episode three. I haven't dropped the BL genre completely, but I mostly enjoy pretty innocent stuff these days, like Seven Days (the best T-rated BL I've read, hands down). I just hate the dub-con situations that happen in most yaoi manga, to me it's just not even quasi-realistic to have someone want to be with a (near) rapist. TL;DR I've come to dislike the tropes of the genre, not the subject itself.
In the last two years of a decade of watching anime I've come across a genre that before I would have dismissed: sports. Even before that I had watched Giant Killing, a football anime, because I adore soccer, but despite loving it I didn't think to watch others because they weren't about a sport I liked. Then I gave Kuroko no Basket a chance and things kinda snowballed from there. It's not in the top three of my favourite genres even now, but sports genre has, at its best, one of the best nakama feels out of them all. They're also pretty darn hilarious if you don't mind how inhumanly good the main character(s) are at their game.
Anyone else have any taste evolution stories they want to share? :)
Oh, sports anime are definitely something I thought I'd pass over too; after all, I have absolutely no interest in real life sports. But something convinced me to try one - Eyeshield 21 - and I loved it. Well, I loved the manga, the anime adaption is another story. But for the most part, the anime adaptions are usually pretty good, from what I've seen, other than the fact that they usually don't finish themselves, and make you read the manga to get the rest.
Anyway, I quite like Kuroko, even if their basketball abilities are ridiculous. That makes it fun! Eyeshield's the same way, but with American football instead. One Outs is really good; it's about baseball, but it takes more of a psychological approach to the game, rather than just team spirit and working hard, so it's pretty different and really interesting. My favorite sports anime right now though is definitely Haikyuu, which is a volleyball anime, and has fantastic writing, characters, animation, pacing, and is actually fairly realistic, at least compared to shows like KnB where the characters name all their moves and have god-like abilities. Not saying I hate that of course, it's par for the course in anime and can be fun, but this is definitely a breath of fresh air and I love it.
