Hey guys. I don't know if anyone on this site is aware of what happened in the past week concerning games "journalism" but I would just like to spread the word on Gamergate. If you are in anyway active on any social media (Am I kidding right?) would you help the gaming community by lending your voice to Gamergate?
Gamergate is basically a call for transparency and equality in the world of gaming. It's a small step for equality in general.
I'm not sure of what I'm allowed to post in the forums exactly but MissAngerist/Ariel Connor on twitter has a great article about Gamergate.
Alright this was a while ago, but I'm curious now what your stance was on this whole thing, especially after the movement was outed as a front to personally attack certain people.
Also, you put "journalism" in quotes, which I agree with when it comes to gaming journalism. What do you think are the major problems in gaming journalism these days?
Okay, I only seen a few things and I been curious as to what is this whole thing?
I'm too cool for a signature UwU
I've been following Gamergate for the past few months now, though I haven't caught up to recent developments. What I do know, from my time spent reading about both sides, I've been led to believe that's not true. The movement isn't a front to attack certain people. Some individuals who identify as being a part of the Gamergate movement do use it as a front to attack certain people and push their own agendas. That is not representative of the movement as a whole, just as those who led doxxes and sent death threats from the anti-gamergate side are not representative of the anti-gamergate movement as a whole either.
Now I don't claim to speak for Gamergate, either. But I think a lot of the people who get behind the idea truly are just hoping for better games 'journalism', as you put it. Take the recent incident with Target Australia, which stopped selling GTA V, without explaining why. Kotaku published an article praising this move, only to later remove it. Aren't games journalism websites supposed to be consumer-minded?
Heyo, thought it might be okay to reply since you replied so long after I did anyway.
I definitely agree there are a ton of people who want, hope and call out for improvements in gaming industry journalism. I am one of those people. I think websites like IGN and Kotaku have been a circlejerk of reviews and phony journalism for as long as I've known them. I don't think those websites are doing any kind of good job being good journalists. And I don't think the Gamergate movement particularly cares about that.
Can you explain your point about Target Australia? From what I've seen "Target Australia Pulls GTA V Due To Depictions Of Violence Against Women", seems to be a good explanation why, and there are plenty of articles all over about this, including on Kotaku.
And no, I don't think journalism websites should be consumer-minded. They should be objective and unbiased as is possible.
Maybe I'm just on the wrong side of the internet to see the truly beneficial side of Gamergate. I don't see gamergaters talking about issues that actually feel important: the power of million dollar game companies to influence review websites and magazines, shitty company dealings when it comes to releasing games, the easily corruptible nature of review platforms in this industry that depends so much websites and magazine coverage therefore leading to self masturbatory news and review sites, the tendency of consumers of the game industry to shut down important discussions of race, gender, and violence in video games and the game community, the general lack of real journalism going on... if this was a legitimate movement there would be more demand to take any and all of this seriously. There have been real issues going on in the game industry for decades, and yet gamergaters seem to latch on to the most irrelevant topics. They are hypercritical of anything that doesn't involve analyzing the way they consume and talk about games.
Maybe that's what I'm trying to say. The average gamergater wants to point as many fingers as possible except at themselves. But this isn't something I just feel about gamergate, this is a sentiment I feel about most aspects of the video game industry. It refuses to take itself seriously and hold itself accountable.
I'm not sure that this should be in games? Debate perhaps? Not sure, just wanted to see your opinion on it. It's more of something to debate on I believe.
