I've been searching through the forums here, and I've noticed some of you either like fandoms on tumblr or you hate them. I want to know why. I've been a part of a few, but I consider myself no longer in them because of the bullshit and drama. Mainly the Supernatural fandom and it's constant shipping wars and hate. Another thing is when they dissect every little thing about an episode and somehow warp their headcannons with actual canon. So, what I'm really asking here is how do you feel about them, why do you like/hate them.

I've never been involved in fandoms really. Like just in general I was never happy being part of a subculture or clique or any group larger than just my friends. It's the same with fandoms.

I love finding good fanart, but it sort of ends there.

And I understand being really into a series or game or whatever, and I think the majority of people are probably fine--reblogging gifs and jokes and opinions and your fanart is cool, go hog wild.

But really weird/awkward people to fandoms are like moths to a fucking flame. The extent to which people get obsessed with their OTPS and OMG / IS TOTALLY CANON <3 just says to me "I don't talk to real people as much as I probably should."

I saw this relatively tame one the other day:

Quote
IMAGINE COSPLAYING UR OTP WITH UR BOYFRIEND/GIRLFRIEND AND U COULD KISSAND STUFF AH
Oh fuck right off. The people who couldn't keep this stuff on the internet and out of real life were the people I got sort of uncomfortable talking to in high school.

I've never been, well, a fan of groups like this. I remember a post like "we are the Potter generation" or something and I was like NO. I DON'T WANT TO BE PART OF YOU. because I do love Potter but I can't stand the whole community thing, the us against the world mentality. BUUUUT that's like my personal problem and I just avoid looking through fandom tumblrs, except on occasions, and even then I just do it to see some gifs and to read random facts I might not know about the subject. Fandoms are very handy for inside information and inside jokes. :P

I'll never consider myself a part of any fandom. I hardly ship people, draw fanart (unless I am head over heels in love with the character), or dedicate a whole blog to a show. There's nothing wrong with doing those things, but I find most fans to be overly dramatic and extreme. It can also get too cliquey for my tastes.

Lol my entire tumblr is fandom/bandom related. I, personally, think bandom is a lot worse than regular fandom. The people that are in the clique-y band fan groups can get so catty and just downright rude. If you say one wrong thing about a band, they go ape-shit sometimes, but on the other hand, some bandom people are super chill and really nice. It just depends, I guess. There are shippers in bandom too, which I think is weirder than shipping fictional characters. I mean, these are real people with real lives and it's always just been creepy to me, especially if the people in the band aren't into at all. If they're like Jack and Alex from All Time Low, who encourage and joke about it, then it's not THAT weird, but like the people who seriously ship Frerard from My Chemical Romance are... people I avoid, to be honest. p:

I like fandoms as a whole though. It gives me something to talk about with people that I wouldn't normally talk with. Common interests, and all. I ship things, but I consider myself a "casual shipper", if that's a thing. haha. I draw fanart sometimes (rarely, actually), reblog ship things, and like to imagine that subtle things in the canon-world are nods to the ship and fandom, but I know how to keep the two separate. And I definitely don't agree with the people who bring their fictional ships into the real world and then try to ship the actors the way that some Destiel shippers do. It's really not cool to ask the actors things about their relationships because you think they're having buttsex in their spare time. Omg no.
