So... I finally finished Devil Survivor(ALL five endings xD), and I loved it! Really looking forward to the second one this February :)
DS1 SPOILERS
It took me a lot of time to finally level up all my demons to lvl 99 and defeat Lucifer, but it was worth it _
I've been thinking about playing Strange Journey next to know if I would like the main series games; I had Nocturne in mind first, but my brother says he played it and it was pretty unforgiving. I heard about Digital Devil Saga, too, and I think I'll try it out after (or while~) I play Strange Journey and Devil Survivor 2. There are also the Persona games, but the other ones (main SMT series, DDS) interest me more. My brother has P3P, so I have seen how it works.
So, have you played this or any other game from the franchise? I know only a few people IRL (probably around 5, including my brother) that know about SMT.
I've never played Devil Survivor or Strange Journey, but I have played Nocturne, gotten all the endings, and definitely recommend it. Yeah, it can be harsh at first and more often than not you're screwed if the enemy hits you with a spell or attack you're weak to and keeps getting extra turns (I've had my entire party wiped out in one turn that way), but once you've built up the main character a bit and gotten a wide variety of demons, it's not so bad.
I prefer Persona 1 and 2 (both Persona 2's, really) more than 3 and 4. They're more in-line with the main series than 3 and 4. No social links, no school aspect, but you get to negotiate with demons rather than just fighting mindless Shadows. Also, the plot in the earlier games tends to be more of a mind-screw than the later ones.
I've played both Digital Devil Saga 1 and 2, and they're worth playing. I find 2 a bit more difficult than 1, but YMMV.
I've also played Raidou Kuzunoha vs the Soulless Army. Don't know if you'd be interested in that one too.
Forgot about the Raidou games... I'll investigate more about them, since from what I saw they weren't turn-based like the others.
If I ever picked up the Persona series, I was think on going directly with Persona 3 or 4 (both for my PS2), but if the first ones were more mind-screwing, I'll consider them :o (I don't have a PSP, though, so that might be a problem. My brother has an old one he wants to replace; if he buys a new one, and I buy a 3DS, we might make a console exchange xD)
Ugh, so many games I want to play now O_O
If the PS1 versions of the early Persona games weren't so pricey I'd suggest shooting for those instead of the PSP versions, but yeah. They're pricey. Also Innocent Sin doesn't have an English-language PS1 version. Eternal Punishment (the other Persona 2) does.
Yeah, Raidou's not turn-based. It's also utterly unforgiving.
Persona 3 and 4 aren't bad. I like them just fine, I'm just used to being able to talk to the enemies in an SMT game rather than them just being mindless, personality-less monsters. Also when you have a lot of Social Links going at once, it can be tricky balancing all of them, especially if you're like me and have to do last-minute level grinding/equipment shopping before a boss fight.
There's more than 5 endings for Devil Survivor, actually. The routes are: Amane, Atsuro, Gin, Yuzu, Kaido, Naoya, and you can also do Honda's for BAD END. Kaido's and Naoya's are very similar, but there's some slight commentary differences between the two.
As far as Shin Megami Tensei games that I've played, I'm in the middle of Persona. Persona 3 and 4 are very different games from everything else in the franchise. I haven't played Digital Devil Saga yet, but I have both of those games on my play list, as well as Nocturne and Persona 2 Innocent Sin.
isn't Honda's ending just Yuzu's though? I haven't played the game for over a year but I've beaten every ending at least twice, and I'm pretty sure after going through the blockade he just shows up out of nowhere. and I wouldn't consider Kaido and Naoya's endings as separate ones, since they are the same, in spite of the dialogue being different at the beginning.
well, either way, DeSu was my first SMT game and what got me into the series. I got my hands on a PS2 last September just to play Persona 3 and 4, and have fallen in love with them. Devil Summoner didn't really interest me because it didn't have a turn system (I don't even remember where I am anymore, not far in the game anyway). I really like Nocturne, but I had to stop playing a few months ago because of exams and then I just couldn't remember what the hell I'm supposed to do next, so I haven't touched it since. I've picked up and beaten DDS1 last month though, and I'm at the final dungeon in DDS2, my disc is pretty broken though and it takes a while to start up which is annoying, so I'm taking a break replaying P4 for the nth time now. I tried Persona on the PSP when I got a chance, but had to give it back soon after so I didn't really get far in the game, I liked it though. didn't have a chance to check out 2 though, maybe for the better, since I couldn't get pulled in. I'm planning on buying a PSP sometime soon though, so I'm just gonna pick up all 3 games for that.

Honda's ending is not Yuzu's ending. Honda's ending involves you breaking the blockade on day 6, and results in BAD END. Yuzu's ending isn't great, but it's not an immediate bad ending the way Honda's is. When I played through the game the first time, I saved before the events for BAD END and then continued on to get Yuzu's ending.
I'm currently in Persona right now, and just got access to the Velvet Room. The interesting thing with Persona is that there's the main storyline and then there's Snow Queen, which was missing from the Playstation North American release.
ah, I assumed you meant Yuzu's since he appears at the end and I just can't forget his creepy face and speech. I always called the one on the 6th day just the 'bad end', like I'm hearing around some sites too.

I liked to get Honda's 'ending' just because of the events and the creepy music :P
And Devil Survivor was my first SMT game, too :D I just started Strange Journey, my second SMT game, and I'm currently looking for DDS and Nocturne. I think I'll start with Nocturne after I'm done with Strange Journey, though.
Oh man I love the SMT series. Nocturne was my first game and I think it's pretty amazing I actually got into the series when I started with that one. XD Has anyone here tried the MMO Imagine? I got up to somewhere around level 20 when it started getting that signature SMT toughness.
And personally I thought Persona 3 and 4 were a nice break from DDS and Nocturne, haha. Since they're much more forgiving, y'know.
edit: I remember I tried playing Strange Journey but couldn't really get into it. I hope I'm not missing anything amazing
I just got this game for the 3DS; I'd never heard of it before. I just started, but I am liking it a lot! I won't read most of this board because I don't want spoilers, but I am very impressed by the game.
I played Persona 4 this summer; it quickly became my favourite game ever and was a gateway into me spending all my money on other RPGs. I bought P3 shortly after and this Christmas I got Devil Survivor and Nocturne because I wanted to get into more of the series. I haven't played much of either (mainly because I kept dying on DS, it is hard as balls and I suck even at easy games) but I really like what I've seen of them.
I'm planning on getting a Vita (definitely not just for P4G, what are you talking about..) so when I do I will finally play P1/P2, yay. And P3P. :|
The only game in the series that I played was Persona 3, and I didn't make it very far. I have been watching the Persona 4 anime and really liking it though. I'm familiar with SMT but not really a fan. Am I missing out?
You're better off playing Persona 4 than watching the anime, to be honest. Persona 4 is set up a bit like Persona 3, but the combat system's improved and the plot's much better-written.
I'm still making my way through Persona slowly, gotta clear out dust from my PSP first.
The anime for P4 is adorable, better after having watched my boyfriend play the game through (a few times), but it's still worth watching, regardless.
I picked up P1, tried P3P, and haven't played P2 or P4. The series is, sadly, just NOT for me. It's a great idea, but I really hate that I can't grind to get anywhere with my personas. I understand that isn't the point of the game, but it should count for something (and it just doesn't, which really bothers me). They're still very good games, I'm just not in the mood to take on a more sophisticated leveling system these days. Hopefully someday, because I'd love to play the series from 1 through to 4.
Anyone in this thread playing Devil Survivor 2 now that it's out?
