This is pretty much the opposite of the topic "Popular movies you hate". What movies do you like, that other people, be it critics, be it friends or family, dislike? Which movies are your guilty pleasures? I'll start with my confessions :).
Star Wars: The Phantom Menace. I was 17 when this movie came out. I was really excited about it, woouw, another Star Wars movie! And I was going to see it in cinema just like my parents did when the original trilogy was released! I went to see it and absolutely loved it. After my viewing I looked the movie up on the internet and it seemed as if people did not like it at all. Jar Jar Binks was a huge complaint, along with a future Vader going "yippeeeee!". And now that I'm older I do see those flaws, among others. Yes Jar Jar Binks can be annoying at times although I think he has some funny moments. But mesa can't help but still loving this movie. And the filmmusic is just awesome!
The Happening by Shamalamadingdong. I know that the latest movies of Night Shyamalan are not very popular, and that is probably an understatement. I did not like any of his latest films, but I did think this movie was an exception. The movie had me in its grip all the way through. I think there were some suspenseful and scary moments in it and I really enjoyed it. But yes, I'll admit, sometimes this movie is a bit like: "ooooh the wind, the wind is scaaaaaary".
War of the Worlds (the Steven Spielberg one). I just checked it's score on Rotten Tomatoes and it's not that bad, but still, everyone I talk to about this movie seems to dislike it. This is one of the rare movies that gives me a feeling of discomfort all the way through, because of it's eerie atmosphere. Dakota Fanning screaming all the way through seems to be a big complaint but I never seem to notice annoying kids (like Anakin) in movies.
Hook. I find this movie such a heartwarming film. I watch it every Christmas and it always makes me feel happy. I know that it's all syrupy but I can live with that :p.
Brother Bear. This Disney animated feature is often regarded as a disaster of a movie, but I've always liked this film. The animation is beautiful and the story is... cliché, but ok. Yes I know the songs are by Phill Collins, again... But I still like the songs and I can't help but enjoying this movie.
I promise you, I have a good taste in movies (I think :)), but everyone can have their guilty pleasures, no? Share yours!
I love Star Wars to death actually. And I love Jar jar xD
Yay for Star Wars! When i saw this movie the first time Jar Jar kept cracking me up, I couldn't help but laugh. I watched it again recently, and he did not crack me up like back then, but he still had some moments where I could not help but laugh :D.
He's adorable and silly,I just love him.I love the plot, but he just bring joy even if people think that he's useless.
I agree with you on that. And I can't help but feel sorry for him when he's being all heroic in the Senate and proposes to give Supreme Chancellor Palpatine emergency powers.
i love the movie CUBE. it's an unpopular, sci-fi, bad graphic film and i love every bit of it. it's about 6 strangers who are trapped in a gigantic cube, comprised of a bunch of other cubes, and the cubes move around. the people try to get out and escape. it's great. it's creepy. it's unique. the second one is kind of crap, and the third one, well, the deaths are gory and illogical, but there were a few good, notable characters. nothing beats the first one though. i miss it. i let an old friend borrow it and they never gave it back. ;_;
I know Cube, I also own it on DVD! The concept of this movie is really unique in my opinion and I also think it's a great movie. I have seen the second one a long time ago but can't remember much of it, I think another dimension was added to the cube? I have never seen the third one. But the first Cube has become a bit of a cult movie now.
the human centipede first & full sequences it has such terrible reviews but asdfghjkl i thought they were genuinely great pieces of horror
It seems like everyone thinks Saw is an overrated series, but I can't get enough of it. :x I'm also a sucker for pretty much any medieval/European movie, even if it's not that good. Arn: The Knight Templar, Age of the Dragons, and Black Death come to mind.
I've always felt like everyone hates the movie Van Helsing. I adore that one. It's definitely a guilty pleasure of mine.
- oh, it is definitely unique. i don't like rewatching movies but every time i'd watch that one again and again i'd pick up something i didn't catch before. i would enjoy the fanbase, as long as they wouldn't tear me apart about not liking the second one. yeah. it takes place in a HYPERCUBE. a 4 dimensional cube, with a bunch of other cubes in it, that has different time that works in different ways in each one. but what pissed me off most about that one was the time the main character stabbed that one guy in the eye, and like, 0.2 seconds later, he comes out of another cube as an old man, saying how he waited for years to kill her. i thought we needed FOOD AND WATER to live... even though it defies time and space, it defies logic. SPOILER ALERT: i also hate the part where EVERYONE DIES. EVERYONE. at least 1 person has to live in a movie. otherwise it's rage all around. i showed my boyfriend cube, all excitedly. he thought it was okay, up until the end where the SPOILER ALERT: smart girl dies. i thought it was sad, but i liked how kazzan got to live. as someone who was a special education teacher's aide for a couple years, i grew to like kazzan almost immediately and thought his talent was super cool and unexpected. in the third one how they more or less explained that, well, i thought that was a great way to wrap up the trilogy and answer questions. regardless of my bf's rage and people telling me, "what's cube?" or "that movie is dumb," it is great and the whole concept is outside-the-box even though it literally is inside a box. xD i think a lot of popular movies are overhyped anyways usually. c: you don't always need boobies or millions of dollars for special effects to make it good.
Christopher Nolan's Batman movies. Almost everyone I know hated them, especially the last movie, but I loved all of them. I thought they were very well done, and I liked Christian Bale as Batman. His voice was irritating at times, but he wasn't a bad actor. And in the last movie, I didn't mind the slow pace and constant talking at all because the plot was engaging, at least to me, so I wasn't bored.
The new Evil Dead remake. Tons of people I know hated it because they didn't understand that it was SUPPOSED to be cheesy. That's what Evil Dead is.
I like Star Wars too. I was just a kid when that movie came out though, so of course I was going to love Jar Jar. Kids love annoying characters. Plus, I wasn't old enough yet to have seen the previous films or understand them, so I didn't really pick up on the things everyone else hated about it. I had so much Jar Jar merchandise when I was little. I don't have any of it anymore, unfortunately. Now that I am older though, and have seen all the Star Wars movies, that one's not my favorite, but I don't HATE it.
Those older movies usually are a lot of fun. I know the special effect are usually not as good etc. but that does not make a bad movie for me. I haven't seen those movies so I can't really comment on them :D.
I haven't seen any of the movies you mention myself, although I do know about Saw. I know a lot of people don't like them, but in my close environment I know a few who love the series. A colleage at work loves them and swears those movies are excellent punishment for bad people (I think something might be wrong with her lol).
I have seen Van Helsing a long time ago when it came out in cinemas and I loved it back then. I know it had a lot of harsh reviews. I haven't seen it ever since and don't remember too much of it, but I do know I loved it back then.
I do agree with you that the second one wasn't that good. Everyone is entitled to their opinion and they shouldn't rip you apart over that. You are right about the food and water issue. They made a big deal out of it in the first movie, if I remember correctly they were chewing buttons to keep their mouths wet. So they should be consistant with that in the second movie too.
I loved the first movie though. From the first death with the wires that chop up the first victim, it really had me in it's grip. I love how Kazzan got to live too, I really liked his character.
I agree with you on the boobies and millions of dollars lol. To give an example that has nothing to do with Cube, I'm getting pretty annoyed with series that constantly show sex and nude scenes like Spartacus or Game of Thrones. Don't get me wrong, I love Game of Thrones, I am reading the books right now. And I'm not a very shy person, hell I'm used to European movies lol, but it seems like they exploit this to get more viewers.
On my fist viewing I did not like the Batman films that much. But recently I viewed them all again and I just loved them. I think Christian Bale is great as Batman, and those who say that he isn't, well, let's just wait how Ben Affleck does the job... His voice was irritating to me at first but he needs to do something to disguise it. After a while I got used to it and it did not annoy me that much anymore. I liked the last movie the best. The villain, Bane, was just excellent and a whole improvement over the Bane in Batman & Robin.
I haven't seen the remake of Evil Dead yet, but I know that the originals are pretty cheesy and are meant that way.
I know what you mean about Jar Jar. I was 17 and I still loved him lol. I was pretty shocked when I found out that everyone hated him. They toned him down a lot for the next movies, I suspect that was done on purpose.
they're actually pretty new; the final sequence is set to release next year. i'm surprised you haven't heard of them. x: if you like gut-wrenching horror involving horror about sociopathy and you're neither faint of heart (nor stomach) i'd recommend it!! the first one isn't gory so much as psychological, although the second one is... not for the squeamish.
i quite like van helsing as well!! it's not oscar-worthy or anything, but it is fun to watch and the scoring and costumes are excellent i also just like looking at the leads tbh.
What? People don't like Nolan's Batman trilogy. ;O Mind is blown.
The only movie I can think of now is Remember Me. I really liked it. I know it got flack in general and for the ending. I also think Pattinson automatically made some on edge. Like it can't be good if it has that Twilight guy in it! :c
Sorry about that, I should do my research better before saying something :). The titel did sound familliar, but it sounded like one of those older horror movies. I've looked it up and I must say it does look interesting. A scientist creating a new pet by sewing the mouths of people to each others rectums? Sounds horrifying indeed :D. I should check it out some day! Thanks for the info!
I have heard of this movie, but have not seen it yet. Yes, Pattinson does have that effect on people. I recently watched the fourth Harry Potter film with my boyfriend and he automatically reacted "uuugh it's that Twilight guy!". And this is a film he made before Twilight came out. I really don't feel this kind of reaction when I see him in different films though.
Me neither. Even if I really hate something (like Twilight), I'm not going to carry that over onto the actors, especially if they can act. And I think Pattinson can act. ;O It's a pity others do that grudge carrying and avoid movies or diss them just because of that other movie association. :c It's a good romantic drama. Check it out if you can! c: I don't want to talk too much, because I don't want to spoil anything. ;x
Thanks for the tip, I will check it out :D.
I know what you mean, I always try to have an open mind towards any movie, no matter what actors are in it. Although I must admit Kristen Stewart is giving me a hard time. I saw her in Twilight (I really don't like these movies either) and again in Snow White and the Huntsman. I do think she acts very similar in those movies and sometimes I just want to tell her to close her mouth lol.
Ditto! xD I saw the same movie without any omg it's the Twilight girl bias and I don't think she's a good actress. The movie wasn't that good either. :c
Haha, you have the same opinion as mine. Especially regarding the leads. I'll never say no to Hugh Jackman or Kate Beckinsale. Loved the music and costumes as well.
The only Nolan Batman movie I truly enjoyed was Batman Begins. The last two didn't really do anything for me. I don't hate them, but they really weren't my cup of tea.
