Is this item a reference to.. something..?

The first thing I thought of when I saw it was the Indiana Jones Raiders of the Lost Ark face melting scene. Some people use it when something "cannot be unseen" and it's so terrible it melts their face off.

Idk if that's actually the reference, but it's the first thing I thought of.
