So, I've recently opened a 'choose your price' kind of art shop to see what people would like to pay for my stuff, but I do feel that some people just want to pay cheap for whatever the result is, and others do indeed appreciate the art.

But today I was looking at the art market and I saw these pet icons things, which had an absurdly high price - that's when I realized I probably don't understand anything about art prices in subeta.

So can you guys help me out with this one? How much do you think these are worth?

1 2 and 3 (same style)

Thank you in advance, guys (:

I agree. People have come to this conclusion that art isn't worth anything when in reality you should try to get at least minimum wage per hour on a piece... If it takes you roughly 3 hours to complete a certain style or whatever, I'd charge around 20$+.

I think you're art is worth at least that much!

Edit: Currently about 3.5 mil sP = 1 USD so I usually round up and charge 4 mil sP equivalent to my USD prices.

Oh yeah! I was actually thinking of making a choose your price art shop, but I browsed through a bunch; I remember yours xD and people were offering like 3-5mil sP or something? Now I'm re-thinking it lol I have absolutely no idea, either, but I do know certain things can fetch a pretty price. My friend sells overlays for real money on this website. $15 for a shirt or something XD I'm actually enthusiastic about people's willingness to part with their money to decorate their avatars lol

Eeek, aint that too much? I do take quite a while to do those stuff just because I really get caried away by the details and stuff. Do you feel like people would actually pay 70m? Omg, Im really happy to hear you think its worth that much, but it just seems so insane!

Art takes time. It's not something you pull out of thin air, it takes work!! So yes.

I don't want to be the party pooper, but i gotta bust your guys bubble. This isn't called a "market" for no better reason. Would you guys be willing to pay the regular price for tomatoes on a smashed one you just scratched from the floor? I doubt it. Thats why people don't buy all pieces of art for the same amount either.

As surprising as it might sound for some of you, your customers have to work for their money too. Art is a luxury you might consider to buy, after you bought all your groceries and paid for all of your bills. Because yes, even non-artists have to eat and live. So if you are expecting minimum wage (something a lot of your customers, especially on subeta, don't get) you gotta deliver too. People are willing to pay for good quality, but if your quality lacks of something, they'll either ask a better or a cheaper artist. And no, art is not entirely subjective and thats something every artist should be able to see. Not being able to get the anatomy straight isn't a cute, personal style. Its a flaw people won't be willing to pay for. So blaming stingy users for not being willing to pay minimum wage is bull**** if you can't offer an appropriate quality.

Aside of that , i think your art is pretty decent. But no, i don't think people will be willing to pay $20 or 70m, and thats because of various reasons. Now excuse my honesty, but this kind of "never say something bad about art" - attitude is bothering me. xD First, i don't know if thats your style, but especially examples 2 and 3 look kind of "sloppy". The coloring looks kind of sloppy, the anatomy looks sloppy and the lines look sloppy too. Now thats NOT automatically a sign of bad art, but indeed something i'd personally would prefer to print on t-shirts for example. So don't get me wrong on that point. However, i'm on subeta for long enough to know, this is not a style people are willing to pay high amounts for. What you see on subeta, is what people love, at least qualitywise. If they hated the art on here, they would have been long gone. And this style is the biggest market on here too. There are hundred of artists offering art like that and if you try to get in the common quad/anthro/human market, you gotta compete with all of them. Experimental art might be interesting for a few days, but thats something you might be able to sell on other sides better.

If i was you, i would either try to change to a more polished look for quads and humans or i'd stick to the first example and thats something you could ask pretty high prices for too. Its unique and looks a bit "creepy" and i bet it would be perfect for profile art too. I personally would enjoy to have something like this on my profile. But on that size, thats something i'd auction off only. Are you able to apply this style to actual commissions? Like, drawing a persons pet in that style? If not, try to do that, evaluate the result and go from there?

It's hard to hear that what you have been working on with so much dedication is just a smashed tomato, an unpolished sloppy work - and that besides that, you blame your customers for not paying enough, while you are actually not delivering in terms of quality. But it's the truth, and I had to hear it. I'm really happy to have heard this, I really am. I understand every bit of what you said, and I will take all of it in consideration.

The second example really was something I did in about 5 minutes (so I understand why you say it looks sloppy), but the third one... Well, let's just say I'm glad to know people see that as a sloppy drawing, so I won't put hours of effort into something like it ever again. Maybe I'll just stick with the first style as you suggested. And yes, that drawing was indeed a comission - so someone elses pet.

I'm not angry at you or anything like that, but something did get me curious: where in my speech is this "never say something bad about art" attitude you mentioned?

Actually the first part was not related to your art, but to the upcoming attitude of "well, i'm an artist so i deserve minimum wage, no matter what i create" - which became quit common lately and which i don't get. The tomato was a comparison to this idea of "all art is worth the same". The farmer had to put the same money and time and work in both tomatoes, which makes them equally worthy. But on the market, they aren't, due to whatever reasons. Maybe one was damaged or came out too small or weird looking - they will have a different value, no matter if the farmer put in the same work. Means, just cause two artists are putting in the same effort and time, it doesn't mean the outcome is the same too. And just like you are not willing to pay the same price for the tomato, you are not willing to pay the same price for the art which is completely different in style and quality either.

Basically you could ignore everything i said above your ping, it was just me expressing my thoughts to this.. well.. attitude i already described. I'm sorry if you felt this was directed to you, but that was my not intention. I guess i expressed myself a bit too enthusiastic.. o.O" edit: Oh and no, i don't mean YOUR attitude either. xD There were already plenty of threads about this topic popping up, many people expressed their opinion and i guess it will stay controversial.

The commission you did, the pet, indeed looks different. But i was more referring to the style. For example, if you compare lines on official pets and your lines, the official ones are super.. exact and neat and artists make sure they all have a certain wide, depending on the area they are placed in. Your lines are more.. "in a flow", thats what i meant with sloppy. I know it can take a lot of time to do lineart with that style too, but in comparison its much faster and easier than the other style - thats why i would consider the other one to be more expensive. However, thats what you'll have to compete with and thats why i mentioned it.

Oh and the "never say something bad" is a common reaction in this forum. No matter how ugly unpolished an artists art is, you will rarely find people flat out telling them to work on their art a bit more before they are trying to sell them. ;)

Oooooooh, that makes so much sense! I completely misunderstood you, I'm really sorry for that. Your criticism will actually really help me grow, now that I understand what you meant! Yes, I think I have seen this around as well, people do only make positive compliments, which are mostly fake. I do agree with your enthusiasm in this topic. I really appreciate everything you said, I think I'll really grow out of this. Thank you ❤️

No problem!

Its not like selling art on subeta is a lost cause, everyone who loves his art will be able to make some money on here. And i do agree, artists who are hired to draw for someone else should be paid properly too. But if your art doesn't sell.. it doesn't sell. So its more helpful to actually tell people what could be working instead of being mad at seemingly stingy customers and the bad system behind. That won't solve the issue of missing income. ^^

I couldnt agree more, you took the words out of my mouth. I opened this topic to receive constructive criticism, not praise. Since I can truly expect honesty coming from you, could you tell me how much you think that first style would sell for?

I'd say around $40-50 sounds like a good start for the example you posted. As i said, its unique and pretty huge, so bigger sums (and thats quit a big sum for subeta) seem legit. If you work on smaller sizes, with less details and more options to hide mistakes, i'd shrink down prices too. And while i would start with a very limited welcome price of $15 i'd raise that as soon as you see you are able to apply this style to pets appropriately. If people get to know you and your style, i see them paying $25-$30 for overlays like that, more if its getting any more complex. (Just keep in mind.. a lot of users on here are students and pretty poor, so they won't bombard you with requests as soon as you got on the $20+ level. ;D)

Oh and.. there is another topic about art pricing going on here: click xD Not sure if thats helpful for you, but different artists, different opinions. ^^
