Like many of us cw artists have been moaning about, the cw submissions team will give a bulleted list of what we should fix, and some of the time we're not sure what they're talking about. I see a lot of the same questions being asked, so I think we should put together a general list of common things to troubleshoot.
This would be in no way a substitute for what the staff hands down, nor would it be an official guide to making cws (cuz that's the staff's job... cough) but since making tickets is kind of like a hit or miss with the "Sorry we can't really help you"-s, we should at least band together and get something down, yes?
Plus I see a ton of people pinging for crits with the same questions.
Pillow shading may mean that you&;re shading too uniformly from your lineart. [insert example]
It may also mean you don&;t have a definite light source, so a light source that is directly between the viewer and the object. This is not desired. Try fixing your light source coming from the top left corner of the image, as this seems to be the most common placement. Light source tutorials here: [/link/] [/link/]
A lot of the time, I see pillow effect slapped on overlays that have lineart that isn&;t thin enough or tapered enough around ends [insert example]
Awesome related things: accepted and denied examples
Resources: lighting/shade guide 1
Other artists' input and addition to general troubleshooting would be AWESOME
@ raichu @ hoar is this worthy of pinging # cwcritiques ?

This is a great idea. I had no idea what they meant by "pillow shading" X.x I thought it's an extension of "softshaded"
I don't know if you've seen this thread yet, but it has some examples of rejected vs accepted images

well, that's what I gather from seeing the posts being labeled "pillowshaded" because some of them are properly cellshaded, but still look very... pillowish.
thanks for the link! There's not too many examples on there yet, but it's pretty good to keep track of these!

You're very spot-on and accurate with a lot of these, especially pillow shading; thank you for explaining it more clearly than I ever can with my atrocious English!
I'll also add things about lineart and colour bleeds, which seem to be other major issues. While colour bleeding may refer to literal colouring beyond the lines, it's more technically the phenomenon of the relative colour of an area being different, due to the colour in the area opposite it "bleeding" to give a different relative colour.
Nonetheless, I think this would be a good idea!
Thank you! I've had a professor compliment me on my descriptive skills, but I always feel bashful about asserting myself//speaking out//putting myself out there. \shrugs
I haven't seen so many people post about those issues, but then again I haven't been a close observer of the cw trade for a very long time. Could you write up something, maybes? And possibly add to what I already have in the OP?
Idk, I'd like to get everything together before anything debuts to the larger public.
I'll come back later to add examples, also to ask people if it's okay to use their previous attempts as examples.

You're very much welcome; judging from your posts, you really do have that gift for writing. The only thing I could seem to write decently would be formal reports or "scholarly"/academic-toned work (which might actually be a good thing for my major!)
I'm actually working on it; I had a draft up for a while, but we just had a power outage, and I forgot to save everything, of course.
That's a good idea; I really do hope people will give you consent for using their previous attempts/denial messages/custom wearable revision progress as examples! I'll probably edit the "rule" post for CWCritique with a link to the resulting thread as well.
