1.) Ways to keep your collection in good shape:

Light: Keep your books out of a lot of light. Sunlight can bleach the bindings of paper back books and dry the leather of leather bound books if not properly moisturized.

Moisture: The moisture in a room can severly impact a books life. To humid and mold can grow on the pages as well as causing the pages to wrinkle up. ( I'm sure we've all seen a good book get attacked by a tipped glass and shrivel. Same affect just a lot slower and more subtle). I also believe {not POSITIVE} it has a part in the foxing {yellowing} of pages.

Temperature: Extreme heat can lead to the yellowing of pages and can sometimes melt/ weaken the glue bindings of cheaper made books. as well as giving any pests a comfortable place to live and breed. Constant LARGE fluctuations can deteriorate the glue bindings of even the sturdiest book over time and cause pages to fall out or even the whole book separate from the cover.

2.)My question:

I'm an avid book collector with just under 1300 books in my collection. All of them are relatively new paper back( Manga, Joke books, Mythology books, Chicken soup for the ___ soul, Psycology books, Stupid ____ books)

Ive Seen silver fish by my collection a lot but recently while looking threw my collection I saw 2 tiny little peach bugs within the pages (Possibly 'book worms') and I was wondering how you keep pests out of and away from your books. (I brought up the age and paperback since bindings and the acid content of newer books is diffrent.)

My friends said call an exterminator and tho they may know how to kill the bugs I'm worried they may not be as concerned about the well being of my collection. So I'm going to YOU. fellow collectors for your secrets.

I have dehumidifiers in the room so it isnt a place they want to breed. And i may get some silverfish bait but im not sure itll get the tini things out of my books.

I'm working on replacing some of the older paperbacks with hardbacks. (Thing is, I just ordered a used copy of SS, only to find out that it has no dust jacket. Man, I was pissed.)

I have doubles (and soon triples) of some books. Everything is mostly fantasy, "guides" (Zombie and Alien Invasion), Historical Asian fiction, or "Idiot's Guides". They don't all fit on my bookshelf, but I'm loathe to move them all downstairs and out of my sight.

Sadly a majority of my books are manga (1210ish of them) and thouse rarely ever come in hard cover. ;A; It would make their upkeep a lot easier since paper back jackets tend to get curled corners and angled spines if not kept perfectly level. And they didn't come with any dust jacket / Slip cover / or even sleeve. But i found a site that once you get enough reward points you can buy 50 of them for like 6 reward dollers. ... Yeaaa.... That may take a while >_>

That sucks your book didnt have a dust jacket. You can always try to find one on some of the book sites on the internet. or go to a place that works with lamination and see if they can give you the plastic and then if you have any of thouse food heat resealers that melt plastic make your own.

XD Same i have a box with all my duplicates i own that i plan on bringing to a book fair to sell or a manga swap to trade the doubles for other books. ( i had Ah my Goddess book 1 3 times thanks to them all having different covers)

I have a few 'guild to' books as well. Even one guild to join the zombie apocolipse. XD Since well as zombie i cant really side with the humans can i XD.

Yea its sad when collections need to be split. Im in that dellema at the moment. My Manga wall is seriously alomst full. (I already had to put the non manga away in a drawer since they no longer fit)

I am working on my book collection but I picked up for a dollar a box set from the 1960's Lord of the Rings books it wasn't made to include the Hobbit

My friend is LoTR ubsessed. Books, Movie, Vidio game. All of it. Im trying to get into the book seriese myself. It seems like it be a good read -^_^-

IT be one of the more actionish adventure books id have read. Im normaly a comady girl. Princess bride, Stupid 911 calls ect.

Moving this Literature. You might get more answers there :) BTW, I work at a bookstore and silver fish eat the glue that keeps the books together so be careful with those! They infest and spread quickly.

I don't know if I'm a book collector, or just a hoarder. LOL.

My favorite type of shopping is used book shopping, and when I go I can and will spend hours (and I never leave without buying at least one book).

However, since I'm big on used books I'm not too anal about my books being perfect and pristine. Don't get me wrong, I wont buy books that are trashed or gross. But well loved books and books who are elderly are perfectly okay with me. :D

I have a habit of buying books for authors I adore. The ones who I will buy their work no matter what are: Ursula K. Le Guin, Sherri S. Tepper, Dave Duncan, Brandon Sanderson, Barbara Hambly... and many others.

Hoarding, collection. Its Almost the same thing. Since there are collectors who buy used books or pre-loved books. Tho id think you a collector. Id put hoarders as people who dont care about their books or 'may one day in 100 years read this' and store them in a box in the attic.

Collectors keep their books in reach. That's my idea of the diffrence. XD

Yea i don't have to many authors I'm to O_O over. I'm more for plot and story. If the back seems good and the first few pages are good i usually buy them and test it out.

OR if its a book to a movie i love. Like Princess Bride.

This is true, I do keep my books out and nice once their mine. And I get fussy if they're not in the right place/order. And I've been fighting the urge to alphabetize them. I have them (to an extent) sorted by genre, but some bleed in here and there.

I still need the Princess Bride! I adore that film, and I've always hear high praise about the book.

The book is indeed very good tho id probably stop reading after the movie ending. >_>

There's a lot more in the book then just whats in the movie. Its good and i like it but Oh well -^_^-

M Manga is alphabetized. I have a hefty manga list.

Not as many worded books but its hard to sort threw so many in book stores manga are easier with less to pick up and sort threw. So yea. I can show you my manga list if you like.

I have sadly never been able to collect a lot of manga. They're always so expensive, and I never want to keep buying them. So, my manga list is sparse.

I'm a avid manga collector. Tho i still have a few hundred non manga books in my collection. i just haven't cataloged them yet. Tho i plan to at some point.

Friends come over to borrow books one and 2 of series in case they think they my be interested in it so I'm almost running a manga/book library. XD comically i charge 10 cents per book. Cheap considering there's no late fees l... Mostly since 5 of my books vanished without a trace. and 3 came back severely damaged so it covers that. And helps me buy new books for them to test out XD

And with over 1300 books to choose from well.... theres a lot of things to choose from

My collection.. i try to keep it in good shape. I collect Authors, really would be the best way to describe it. If I manage to find an author that i'm crazy about I collect all of the books that they've ever written. (( thank goodness I haven't fallen in love with Stephen King or Tom Clancy x.o; )) My manga list is relatively short, Chobits 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7 Strawberry Panic 1, 2 -sniffles .. discontinued- Venus Vs. Virus 1 Darker than Black Omnibus >.<; that's it.. XD so far.. >.> but i plan on getting more.. much more -nods- maybe even the japanese versions of Strawberry Panic, even though i can't read them i still want them.. -obsessive twitch-

I collect books (I guess) but it's mainly just finding an author I like and collecting everything they've produced. I have not counted my books, and I do not count manga or other comics or graphic novels as books. They are comics, that is something different. I think I have somewhere around 200 books? Most are paperbacks, few bound books have dust jackets as I hate them. Floppy old things. I prefer bleached backs any day to ungainly dust jackets! I do not mind books being worn and cracked, as long as they do not wear out. I do not keep them as decoration after all, and I do not plan on selling them. I mainly own modern and old classics, physics and political science books. A majority are Penguin ones, lol. I am very cheap!

I have not had any issues with pests in my books though. Do you store yours near the floor or close to the wall? My shelving is away from the floor, individual shelves about 1" away from the wall as well. I also clean my shelves every week or so, with a more thorough rinse once every other month or so. It is also vital to keep your room in good condition! Silver fish thrive in dust and dirt.

I am currently looking for a nice hardback edition of Middlemarch (untranslated), and to add to my ever-growing collection of Wodehouse books. I am always on the look-out for ones I haven't read!

I count them as books just since i keep all of mine stored together. in my hobby room. and they are bound and printed the same way as books are. Non gloss paper on everything but the cover. things i don't count are color pages comic books, and magazines Tho its not out of bounds to be spoken of in here. since the paper is completely diffrent and has its own care instructions as well as its bound with staples not glue or binding like other books. Manga Books and normal books have the same exact care requirements and are made in the same way so i count them -^_^- Tho i know not everyone douse.

Sadly i cant help but keep my books against the wall since the shelf IS my wall. I just have shelves drilled into my walls so its not realy to much of a choice. Tho i keep my books off the floor. by at least a full foot. Used to be more but alas i needed to add another shelf.

i should probably clean my shelves more often but i just never really find the time to clean off 2 walls of books in depth. i dust them and everything but i don't really take each one out to get to the shelf itself. since 1500 books is i bit of a pain to move around ( if you count my old text books and other books i have there.... not like 2,000 if you inclood my collectors comics and magazines.

I'm not exactly sure how many books I own, I think between 100-150 but most of it is probably manga, I know I have ~80 volumes of those.

I also love collecting old books. I especially love collecting old books that have signatures or bookplates from used book stores. I like to wonder about where the books have been before I had them. :) I usually only keep books I really enjoyed, but I am reluctant to sell my copy of The Naked Runner by Francis Clifford (I thought it was pretty dull) because of the signature in it. The original inscription has been erased (the indention the pencil made can faintly be seen but most of it is unreadable) and instead has been replaced by "The Heatess" (unless I'm reading the handwriting wrong). The mystery is kind of appealing to me.

I usually buy my used books from the same store, and I've ended up buying two books on separate occasions that were owned by the same Harry Papazian. The books I have that were his are Green Mansions by W.H. Hudson and Fathers and Sons by Ivan Turgenev (I haven't had a chance to read either) and it looks like Mr. Papazian enjoyed books with illustrations, since both are filled with them.

I usually have just one copy of each book, but the Artemis Fowl books got reprinted with brand new covers with beautiful illustrations so I bought a second set.

One thing I have found is that you have a greater risk of having a pest infestation if you bookshelves are made out of pressed wood. The eggs are small enough to survive the pressing of the wood particles. If your bookshelves are made of pressed wood get some shelving paper to put between the books and shelves.

Another thing to help your books last is to make sure your hands are clean. And if you have old books (around 10 to 20 yrs) that you handle regularly you may even want gloves. I have some books that my mom got me into when I was in third grade (1989-1990) and afer years of reading them the pages literally disintegrated before I was able to get new copies. I still have those books :D and the corbers of the pages are mostly gone. So yeah keep your hands clean.

As for collecting... I am a book addict!!!!!! I cannot bare to part with my books. I would rather go to the store and purchase a book than go to the library. Some of my books are in boxes, but my favorites are in my bookshelves and all around the house :D

There are a couple of authors that I collect, but I also go for what ever catches my interest. I love fantasy/scifi, historical romance, paranormal, teen and again what ever catches my attention. My all time fav author is Tamora Pierce. She writes fantay and it is her books that my mom gave me that the edges of the pages and the coves are disintegrating. I also really like Karen Chance, Patritia Briggs, Hannah Howwel, Julie Garwood and Yasmin Galinore (sp?).

Yea mine is hard wood wall shelving. So I'm thinking i may have to have some sort of glaze or something applied to smooth the shelves out and put a extra layer between the wood and the books for added protection. I plan on putting some ceder block book ends or things aswell to hope the auromatic wood drives them away since i know ceder helps with a lot of pests.

Thankfully i dnt have any disintigrating pages.My worry is more all the bugs I've seen in the room. And the fact there yellowing slowly but surely.

I know! I have so many books. Mostly manga but i have many of the chicken soup books and stupid ___ books like stupid crooks and just basickly a bunch of feel good / funny books. As well as a collection of science and biology books.

Boarders and Barns & Nobles are 2 book places near me and both aren't doing well so I'm worried there going to close up and there wont be a book store. Its horrible. I prefer the paper and ink books over the nook and other E-readers. Its so sad there becoming so popular and most book shops are sort of deign out thanks to people preferring everything digital now.

I've never actually thought about how I store my books... My favourite ones, and the newer ones, on on the shelves in my room, while the ones I don't re-read go in the basement in boxes. Oops. I don't have any room for them, or else I would just keep them all on shelves... I spent a day making a list of all my books in alphabetical order :P I have exactly 410 books. Mostly all fiction.

My favourite author is Sherrilyn Kenyon, she mostly writes paranormal books.

410 isn't a small personal collection its actually pretty large personal collection compared to most people. Only small if your comparing to Avid bookaholics XD since there are people with actual library's with a few thousand books. I only have around 1,500 books which is a lot to most tho there are people with many more.
