Since I stopped by another hair place on my way home this evening for a trim, this is probably one of the worst hair episodes I have yet to have. Well besides the frosting episode where I had to redye my hair 12+ years ago...

I had shortish hair that was maybe about 4 inches away from my shoulders, just about started to be able to put it into a ponytail, went to get a "trim/styled" last night with my regular stylist. I don't know what the F happened. I showed him a picture, told him I didn't want much off. I didn't realize the full extent of the damage until I combed out the puffiness of the styling products (which on top of everything else caused me to have a reaction/breakout) and rewashed my hair at home. And even if I wasn't such a wuss and spoke up when I realized what happened, it was too late anyways after I put my glasses on. I had a SHAGGY MULLET. Like half of my head is a short layer all around, like mushroom, sides cut short at an angle, and there was a thin bottom towards the back which was supposedly the length he claimed he didn't take off.

I went to a low end haircut place (Supercuts) to get the long layer trimmed after work today so it looks more like a bob. I set out a goal to grow out my fine oily hair 3 months ago, and now I am back to square one, plus probably add 3 more months to that for all the layers to be able to grow out. I started wearing headbands again because of summer, now they will be my best friends.

Sorry for my ranting and sobbing on Subeta again. Stressssed.

DOWN WITH MULLETS!

How often do you folks go for a TRIM? Got any hair stories?

I seriously thought about going back to the original hair place and talking to my stylist to fix it, but now I'm like scarred.

To date my worst experience has been at Master Cuts. Keep in mind my hair is never shorter than shoulder length, has a mind of it's own (as in some days it dries VERY curly and others barely a wave), and I spent 6 years growing out the damned layering my mother always had me get. So I very much like my long hair without layers.

Background story: One day I was at hellmart and had some spare cash, decided to get my hair highlighted but no style ideas for the actual cut. So I asked my stylist what was an easy to dress up/down but also low maintenance cut? She trimmed off a few inches from the back and then feathered my sides. For those who don't know feathering is simply taking the scissors picking an area along the face to start at (eyes, cheek bone, chin ect ect) and at an angle slide them down the hair length to make a slightly layered look from the front. Typically this is done by parting your hair directly in the middle so when you decide to style it it won't look strange. Also called framing in other areas. So this lady made me happy all these years ago with this simple hair style.

Now to my nightmare: Awhile later I needed a simple trim with re-feathering. I was out shopping at the mall and figured Master Cuts was there and I had cash I didn't know what to do with and getting rid of split-ends won. So I go into the shop and ask how much a trim of 2 inches and feathering would cost. The front lady argued with me that what I was talking about was layering not feathering, even after I showed her my current style and explained how my normal stylist did it. This arguing went on for a good 5 minutes, I should have told them off and left, but insisted I get my hair cut. I get to the chair and it's clear they've labeled me a "problem" customer. They did anything they could to say they couldn't help me. Checked for lice, scalp issues, any reasons as a hair cutter you can turn someone away other than their "behavior" and when they found none they proceeded. They didn't wet my hair down at all, just combed it as smooth and flat as they could. The stylist totally botched my hair. The feathering was started to close to my eyes so that for the next couple months I HAD to use a straightener or else my hair would dry curled and poke my eye. The backside was also cut oddly my friend told me, apparently I had some varied lengths. i was so pissed at them more for how they treated my friend. She simply asked if they styled wigs or if they knew anywhere that did or if it's better to do it at home. they got all snotty and said no they don't, they also don't know who might and that you "have" to be a "certified" stylist to even get hair scissors to get the best look of cutting a wig.

I was so mad with the overall treatment of both of us that i never went back, never will, I'd rather use my own teeth and supplies around me than go to them ever again.

FINALLY GOT THE 15K WARDROBE DONE!!!!! Next up gutting and selling it.

I am so sorry that happened! I am a licensed hair dresser and I have to say it is a pet peeve of mine when other stylists do not ask questions until they clearly understand what their client wants. I will spend twenty minutes if necessary chatting with whomever is in my chair until we have figured out what they want, are willing to do in case it's not possible, etc.

Have you considered investing in extensions? They would help mask your botched hair cut as well as help to provide you with a fuller look.

I can just imagine :( I've seen similar styles on people before and they're not that flattering.

I don't go to hairdressers anymore, as my current style (shoulder length, blunt a-line bob) can be maintained by literally putting my hair in a low ponytail and hacking it off. I've been maybe a few times in my life, and I've never thought the cost justified the result. Perhaps if I was having some drastic, difficult haircut, but not for just a trim and layers.

- I don't know what he was thinking or why he got all hacky with it and felt the need to chop off half of the length of my head. There's like three main layers matching up to my eyebrow, earlobe, and then half way down my neck which is now cut to my chin. And the front sides only go up to my earlobes.

Extensions cost a lot, and a lot to maintain. I'm not sure if they would be a good option with me as I have to wash my scalp regularly, and with a prescribed medicated shampoo because I have scalp issues (which was going good, but has now flared up all over again). My hair is also fine and I would worry about the damage they would cause. I'm planning on wearing headbands for the next two months or so, from past experience my hair will change it's shape and behavior in about a month or so and continue from there. And then I will get trims just on the bottom and leave the rest. How often do you recommend trims? And how much in length off would a trim be?

Like this is the best pic that shows what was going on, except not that long in the back. And then I ran into a Supercuts the next day to get about an inch and a half off the bottom back so it was out of the mullet territory. I went regularly to a hairdresser because I had an angled bob and then an asymmetrical bob for the past 6 years. I am officially banning myself from any fancy stylists.

The only person who can have an acceptable mullet is David Bowie. Sorries.

I like woke up this morning thinking for a second I had my hair back, NOPE.

These kinds of experiences are the reason why I only go to one person to trim my hair. If she ever quits or retires or whatever, I will probably never get my hair cut again. She's the only person who ever listened to me, style-wise. She'll tell me what she thinks would look good/better, but in the end, she always goes with what I tell her to do. I only ever get a trim of an inch or two now, since I'm trying to get super-long hair down past my rear-end (it's just past my shoulder-blades now).

I always go to the same salon with the same person. I got a new one because my last stylist was getting really bad. I go for a trim once a year, it's expensive and I have long hair anyway. I go for a trim when my fringe is blocking my sight (like right now).

My worst haircut was when I looked like a sheep. I had short hair and I curl a little, so I looked like a freaking sheep. HS made fun of me.

I'm supposed to tell you every two weeks but honestly it depends more on how quickly your hair grows. You could invest in Nioxin which is a shampoo and conditioning treatment. There are different levels for it and it will help your hair thicken. You could also take prenatal vitamins to assist with that. :)

Yikes, I hate mullets. Sorry that it happened to you, I think I'd cry if it had happened to me.

I went to a hairdresser for the first time in years last month, got a slightly layered haircut and golden highlights. While it looks okay (everyone around even says it looks great) I kinda regret the highlights, next time I definitely want something else, most probably red as it suits my type more imo...

- Every two weeks? wows! I've always read between 6-8 weeks. On my travels today I picked up some hair, skin, and nails vitamins with biotin and vitamin C. So idk, let's see.

- I got participial highlights for the second time ever back in January and I regretted going with such a brighter blonde than the time before. Within a few months I started seeing my roots, and I couldn't see myself continuously doing it to keep up with it. eh, they were okay at the time

I rarely get mine cut/trimmed, but when I do I go to my aunt. I'm lucky she's learned what to do with my hair, because before I would go 2-3 years without so much as an end trim. As a child I had hair down to my knees, and when my dad remarried the bitch made me cut it like...maybe an inch or two long and everyone thought I was a boy and it also kinked and curled in to a fro. And i've been traumatized ever since. Someone I used to go to school with ran in to me again in college and told me she "didn't recognize me without a fro" which was awesome since she made fun of me for it back then, too. Right now my hair is maybe 4 inches shy of touching my ass, and is a deep pink with some natural wave to it.
