How do I stop the events on the side from staying up. I would like to see the shoutbox, I keep missing things.

Do you mean you want it to stick on your dashboard view no matter what? If that's what you want, then go here (which is accessed from personal, user dashboard, sidebar) and check "Dashboard" in that first section.
