I would say that it works well enough.

The simplest explanation of steam punk that I can give you is this: Imagine Victorian (late 1800s) style clothing with their version of what the future would be like. They didn't have electricity. They thought everything would be steam-powered or clockwork. Fantastical inventions, such as rayguns and clockwork machines are common. Steam punk style does not need to be gender specific. Women can wear canvas pants, poofy Victorian dresses, or anything in between. Other things that people relate to steam punk include airships, trains, gears/cogs and goggles. Steam punk is about adventure and inventing.
