When you stop failing at it.

Story time, my little brother got skyrim for christmas and it being the most raved about game of the year I was happy to try it. I consulted a guide, picked a good build for a magic user, and decided I was going to try a mage run. I then proceeded to get my ass thoroughly handed to me in every dungeon because every monster kicked my ass before I got any significant spell damage in. Bleak falls barrow was the only one I managed to clear. I couldn't even travel /too/ the dungeons because I kept getting jumped by bandits/bears/sabercats on the road.

So I rage quit and decided skyrim just wasn't my personal cup of tea. However my little brother kept playing it and every time I saw him have an epic showdown with a dragon I felt a little jealous because, well, it looked awesome.

So I decided if things were going to murderize me before I could get two hits in I'd pick a stealthy character and snipe from a distance until I could get my stats up. I remade as a Khajit and suddenly it was like an entirely different game. I was breezing through dungeons, I snuck past road bandits, I joined the thieves guild and made a fortune while meeting some of the most interesting characters in the game. I've made it to level 25 and haven't slowed down XD.

So now I'm kind of interested in hearing if anyone else has had a similar experience? Not necessarily just with skyrim but with any game where you tried it, couldn't get into it, but came back to it later and loved it to pieces?

For me my Altmer mage is the one I enjoy the most in Skyrim. What you (or at least I) absolutely need is a heavy armor follower, or if you want to go overpowered, Barbas (Clavicus Vile's daedra dog, who will follow you forever if you don't complete Clavicus' quest), who is not only unkillable but immune to Shouts too. My mage has near master cojuration so he can summon a daedra lord as well, and those are really powerful against most enemies. Add to that master alteration and high destruction and things are usually a breeze. On the other hand my sneaky chara is nowhere near as fun to play as my sneaky chara in Oblivion and is laughably weak in comparison.

I totally understand your not getting into Skyrim, tho. I've completed the main quest, but every time I play the game I still kinda ask myself why I play it. I was obsessed with Morrowind and Oblivion but aside from the music and the dragons, Skyrim does virtually nothing for me. Ultimately I find the game shockingly boring, and thus feel cheated in a way.

Hmm, I've never rage quit any games, but Dead Rising was a very close call. The only game that caused me to fantasise throwing my controller on the floor. Then I bit my teeth, grinded my way to near max level and got Megabuster (best weapon in the game) and it became much more tolerable, even though I'd never say the game was fun in the carefree way: too much worrying about time limits and other annoying stuff.

it was pretty funny watching my mom try to beat bleak fells barrow. she is a new elder scrolls player, and still uses the stupid view where you can see your person. i finally just told her to attack from a distance and use the dungeons traps to kill the damn things. but i've been playing elder scrolls since oblivion came out (i was about 7) so am pretty beast at them, so it could be she wasn't really that bad.

the game did quit when i was little was a nifty little game called evolution worlds for the gc. the second boss was some kind of giant dinosaur flower thing and i tried it like 50 times and still couldn't beat it. (final fantasy style turn based combat) and ended up selling it in frstration. i was looking in the gc section of gamestop a couple years ago and saw it and couldnt resit buying it. it is now one of my favorite games.

ok the guy who voiced haku in spirited away voices a whole bunch of random people in skyrim, including sven the bard in riverwood. and i like all the new things you can do, with the blacksmithing and cooking and everything. i think i might like oblivion better but that is just because i dont have a very high leveled person yet :) and i barley ever do the main quests, they tend to bore me. i do things like thieves guild, dark brotherhood, and mages guild. plus i am a fan of random villager quests. those are the most fun.

lol When I first played Oblivion, I'd make a mix/match of abilities with either Nord/-Imperial and sort of get through the game. Week or so before Skyrim, I decided to try out a Wood elf with all bow abilities and just, wow.

So I started Skyrim and really had no challenge what so ever in playing it, because I play crouched about 80% and aiming my bow :p

After I sort of "beat" the game I guess, I started over as a Nord with 2-H weapons and wow is it fun. Also joined Stormcloaks this time so it wouldn't be awkward.

Haha! I had this problem with Morrowind. Just could not seem to get into it. And then it turned out being one of my favourite games ever, and got me hooked into the Elder Scrolls. Loved Oblivion, then had the same problem with Skyrim. I could play fine, but it just wasn't pulling me in. Until recently. Hooked again!

Now I've got Fallout New Vegas Ultimate Edition, and I can't get into that despite loving Fallout 3. I'll get sucked in eventually I'm sure.

There's something about Bethesda games...
