I never played a SH game myself (I'm more made for Resident Evil.) but watched playing a couple of them.

Personal conclusion: I love Downpour and like SH3, I think The Room is okay but boring at times and SH2 can kiss my arm and wave goodbye for the main character annoys me more than anything. The Silent Hill OSTs are generally amazing though, listening to some of the songs pretty often.

i agree with you on sh2, i absolutely don't care about the protagonist, and it's the same with sh1.

i've heard good things and bad things about resident evil, but i think i might try it soon.

I recently bought Silent Hill Homecoming on the PS3 but I can't play for very long at a time because horror games always freak me out and make me paranoid! What I have played so far has been pretty creepy but fun. I also bought the very first SH but the gameplay and graphics were terrible so I never finished it. The only horror game i have ever REALLY wanted is Outlast but it will be a while til I can get a PS4 unfortunately.

I played virtually every silent hill game to date, except for the Vita one. I did start with one when it first came out and I was a kid, so that terrified me to biits but it didn't stop me from playing and collecting the series and SH3 will forever be my favourite, mainly cause the main Protag is female.

So opionions, so this may take a while.

SH1: great for it's time and still manages to send shivers down my spine since it was basically my introduction to the whole series. SH2: I love this one for it's story, it really messes with you and leaves you wanting more, considering it has multiple ends. SH3: The story, Heather and the fact that this one is the most fascinating one to date is all I really need to say. SH4: It was terrible, I mean, it had some good parts but it could have went better. Has some nice scares in it. Origins: I haven't played that in a long while but from what I remember it had an interesting storyline and was freaky on the PSP with headphones. Homecoming: I somewhat expected a bit better from it but I manage to finish that but wasn't scared at all, which was sad. Shattered Memories: was a pain in the ass, to be blunt. The game mechanics was fascinating, the story is impacted to what you do and it was a nice change. Downpour: Since 3, this is one other game that actually amused me, taking some new systems and mechanics, such as the rain cycle, it made the game more difficult but very much worth it.

As said, I haven't played Book of Memories but once I get my vita, I will mention it but what I am looking for is Kojima's make of Silent Hills. It scared me and I loved it, I love the promise that it will bring to the SH franchise.

I should add I am a huge fan of horror games, ever since I was little and had Doom and RE as the main factors.

Silent Hill 2 had a really interesting plot imo. Downpour had some neat features but I felt like it didn't really live up to some of the other games. Shattered Memories has to one of the more dull games in the series for me. And I personally liked the plot in Homecoming and The Room. Silent Hill 3 was pretty stellar and unfortunately the movie adaption of the game sucked so much compared to the game. I...really need to rewatch playthroughs though. Need to refresh my memory on some games for more up-to-date opinions.

Silent Hill 2 is actually one of my favorite games in the series! The atmosphere was the best out of the early games. The third one is probably my second favorite. If you have the time, play the second one. Although most people like Silent Hill 4: The Room, I feel it's the weakest in the series. It wasn't originally planned out to be a Silent Hill game until last minute, so it's kind of off. The voice acting is badly done for when it came out, and the whole setting didn't feel like a Silent Hill game. I'd still recommend playing it just to see how you feel about it, though!

Downpour was INCREDIBLY disappointing. There is no mention of anything Silent Hill-esque save for the fact that they called whatever hell he ended up in "Silent Hill". It doesn't have any hints or trademark characters, so it doesn't feel right. Shattered Memories is alright for a Wii game. You can't fight, it's all running, but it's interactive and your ending depends on your actions. That's pretty cool and unique to only that game.

Homecoming is known for being the worst of the series. It was actually the first game I played in the Silent Hill franchise, so I have a soft spot for it. It has a couple glitches, and the fighting system is pretty bad, but the story itself is something I found interesting. It's a little predictable with certain aspects, but otherwise it isn't as horrible as people say it is.

The whole "PT" (Playable Trailer) thing that came out mid-last year is showing what the next Silent Hill game's atmosphere will be like. It's in the making, and has Norman Reedus in it (Daryl Dixon from TWD). The two well-known directors/game writers working on it gives the community hope that it'll be an improvement over Downpour.

I digress; I hope you like the SH series and the community. It can get spoopy sometimes, man.

I was so pumped for the Silent Hill 3 movie adaption, and was incredibly disappointed coming out of it. Pyramid Head is not somebody's pet to be commanded. Heather is a bad ass, definitely, but she had no reason to have the power to wrangle Pyramid Head who is nothing but a manifestation of guilt anyway. :(

If you don't plan on playing SH1 or 2, maybe you can take the time to watch someone play 'em. SH2 is it's own separate story from SH1 and SH3, concentrating on the town itself, so you could skip out on it anyway! 3 is a direct sequel to 1.

I'm about to kinda rant and stuff, so...... I'm so sorry if it's too much.

I grew up loving the hell out of the horror genre, especially games. I'm a HUGE, probably die-hard, fan of Silent Hill... but only of the original 1~4 by Team Silent. I might sound like a hard ass, but when you love something so much and realize that it's getting thoroughly wrecked by it's company at a shoddy attempting at money milking... (Man, look at those reviews for the newer games.. and they're still at it.) It sucks.

SH2 is my favorite of the four. That kinda goes for the majority of fans. That's also exactly why the newer games' stories are handled the way they are. The newer developers made a formula based on SH2 and a mix of SH1. Trying too damn hard to be symbolic and psychological, that they miss it by miles. Sticking Pyramid Head and nurses in whenever they can, but that only belonged to James. ALSO Hey x is looking for y throughout the game!←

Anyway, second fave is probably 3, then 1, and finally The Room. 4 isn't so great, but it's the sort of love where it's like a dumb kid sibling and you're hard on them or w/e, but you still love them unconditionally. Haha. Actually, 4's OST might be my favorite even though not all of it was even in the game, lol.

As you can tell I didn't enjoy the newer games at all. They just. Lacked the same heart. Origin is where they royally fucked up by attempting a prequel to something the team didn't actually understand. Homecoming felt more like SAW. I kinda liked Shattered Memories, but I don't know why it exists. They at least tried new mechanics, but it's just blah.

Don't want to talk about Downpour. Book of Memories is probably iffy too, but I haven't looked into it. (I hear it's like a top-down RPG, strange decision.) Akira Yamaoka left KONAMI by then, so it doesn't even have OSTs for me to appreciate. (Maybe Daniel Licht does great work too, but I can't be arsed.) I'm a huge fan of Akira Yamaoka, his music is my everything. So glad he's working with Suda51 now, 'cause loooove his bizarre games.

Honestly don't know how to feel about "Silent Hills". Sometimes when a franchise is given to someone else, there's a chance they actually treat it right. But so far no one has been able to get the lore right and the same feel the series was known for. Them slapping big names on it feels a bit strange, but Kojima is a cool guy. So it's like ?????? We'll see.

BTW if anyone bought the HD collection, I feel really sorry. They did pretty terrible with it... You guys can find a review by TwinPerfect on Youtube, they really beat down on how terrible it is, but it's hella long. They also have a series of videos that go behind the lore of SH. Informational, but half of the community hates them because they caused some trouble a few years ago.

As for the movies, they sucked. Turns the story of SH into a BURN THE WITCH, WHAT AN EVIL LITTLE GIRL kind of story and it's like lol?? That's not what happened. Nice special effects, though. I don't even know what to say about the Revelations movie because it's embarrassing, even on it's own.

Note that I can't state my opinion on scare factor because horror games and movies don't seem to scare me anymore. So maybe if you like to be spooked, these games can still do something for you???
