There are some beautiful items out there created by very clever people, some of them are private and will never be for sale :0(
I wish there was some small indication of this, such as a P in the preview or similar, so I can stop wishing.
I've been looking at the Released Custom Wearables thread, Im not ashamed to say I find it hard to know who is selling the item or if its private/buyable.
Isn't the whole "Private items" situation a user-made thing? I mean, I know staff has said they won't enforce any user-made rules regarding selling or trading (of private items), so I can't see them making any kind of indicator for them.
What Archer said.
Just stop wishing for custom wearables altogether, you'll notice that it will lessen your amount of stress a lot. :)
From the Custom Wearables Rules and FAQ thread
What are Private CWs? A. Private CWs are not a "category" of custom wearables that we officially recognize! This is a user-created idea and not one that we have official rules for. Although users are welcome to create 'guidelines' for their private CWs (for example, asking users do not trade them, sell them, etc), these rules will not be enforced officially by staff!
Since the term Private is only by user standards, I don't see a reason for staff to add another icon to the CI. Often times a single (or multiple copies) are sold to the public in an auction type setting. Would those copies be excluded from the mark?
Further if you search for the item it's not too difficult to figure if it is private, and if you can't you can always ask the Identity tread in the Discussion forum.
As handy as having some kind of a notification that the item is private would be, it's not up to Subeta and they've already said they won't enforce it. So no, sorry.

As others stated, private cws are user enforced only so subeta will pretty much never endorse a notification system on them in the first place. They're an entirely used only aspect of the site so there wouldn't be any reason for subeta to endorse it in the first place.
Like other have said privates can be a very gray area as copies from private batches become public...and to add to it sometime privates get pawned and there is no way to keep track of what copy it what as they get passed around--even as an artist or releaser. Sometimes if the person who released the private finds out a copy has been sold/traded/pawned they will ask everyone to wear their copy to find out who let go of theirs and then bar the person that sold/traded/pawned from getting any more of their cws.
I'm pretty sure at one point was working on a private list of all of the private cws, however, I am not sure if that came to be as I haven't heard any more talk of a master list being made. But, it would be worth asking. You are not the only one that struggles to keep up with what is what. The best way is to ask the artists and I know knows a way to find the artist of most cws. If you ask around there is a way, it just isn't the most simplified, but that is what happens when things aren't black and white, honestly, it is a privilege to be able to have some much freedom when it comes to cws and we are lucky to have it.
Hope that helps you some! ❤
