I'm a college student about to wrap up a workshop class for the semester, and one of the more interesting forms of writing I learned about is flash fiction. Flash fiction is super short stories, 1000 words or less, and tend to have more information off the page than most. I've personally fallen in love with writing them, as I have attempted 3 or 4, and while they aren't all pieces I'm particularly proud of, it's a fun exercise.

I think it's a practice everyone should try, especially those who may want a change in pace from what they usually do. Have you heard of flash fiction before? Have you tried writing it? How successful have you been? Would you like to try it?

I've seen fan fiction sites with something like that, but usually called drabbles, not flash fiction. I've actually never heard that term used before. That said, I think a lot of what I write tends to fall more into that category just because I tend to write a lot of stuff in one go. The majority of my pet stories were done within a couple hours from concept to actual story because I'll get the idea in my head and then just write it out and in that fashion it just sorts of writes itself.

I do go back and correct the mistakes, the obvious ones, after I've written whatever I've written though. Anyway, it actually sounds pretty fun, I've found that in general I tend to be much better at writing short fiction than I am at long fiction because eventually the weight of whatever worlds I create in long fiction tend to peter out and start convoluting and not making sense, but if I write stand alone stories, they're within their own separate universe that's not part of a larger universe overall.

Flash fiction is amazing. What's even better is that a lot of the literary magazines I like to submit to now accept flash fiction and give those stories the attention they deserve. I wish I was better at writing it.

I've never heard of this in my life but it sounds amazing and I must try it out some day. I've done short stories, usually 1-2 pages long but my big problem is when it comes to writing I like to flesh out my work or at least make it entertaining/interesting and often get carried away. But this really does sound like fun and a challenge. I will give it a shot for sure!

This sounds like it would be perfect for me, since I love writing but usually have a lot of trouble staying interested in longer things, especially when it gets beyond the point of a few chapters. I'm going to have to try this sometime really soon.

Someone did a thread back in May. A Story A Day and we had to write stories with different scenarios or styles. I made quite a few good ones that month and i was disappointed that the person quit doing it. :( I have so many ideas in my head but I have trouble putting words down. I uh....have problems describing things.....I will sit there and think for a few minutes how to word something or how it should be worded or whatnot. So annoying so most of the time I quit. I am currently trying to write for my other pets (and i need someone to help me proofread Pie Maker's story...just three paragraphs.)

I've done this with fanfiction before, never exactly 1000 words, but however many random words someone wanted to give me. I used to take prompts from a friend of mine and just go and write that.

Something that I think would be really cool would be to take the 1000 words and draw a prompt from a hat full or random prompts/opening sentences or something like that. I think I might try that actually. That might actually get my brain working and get me motivated to write my novel.

I've heard of it, but I could never successfully write it myself since I think in big terms--long plots, intricasies, surprises, character development. I don't even think in terms of individual novels. I think in terms of series.

But we did just talk about super short stories in my writer and reader's circle. One lady brought in the following piece entitled "Grief" - "Without thinking, I made two cups."

Please, please don't ping me. Please.
