Seconded what prettydynamite said about James Herriot. There's humor and sadness in his work but the fact it was based on things that happened to him as a vet make it all the better. I adore his first book All Creatures Great and Small. In my opinion it is the best of his books. :)

The Three Musketeers, might not be your cup of tea ... still maybe worth a look. Intrigue, drama, mystery and a dash of romance. The Count of Monte Cristo is another by Dumas that is well done.

Have you read Frank Herbert's Dune series? What with science fiction with actual science, and ecology and psychology being pretty much the main threads running throughout the series, it could be right up your alley. It's definitely not light and easy reading, either.

Other good choices might be Kim Stanley Robinson's Mars trilogy (Red Mars, Green Mars and Blue Mars) and Stephen Baxter's Mammoth trilogy (Silverhair, Longtusk, Icebones). More intelligent SF-with-actual-science. :)

A Clockwork Orange sounds right up your alley. As Dream said, the dialogue can be kind of thick and hard to understand. I occasionally just googled 'clockwork orange dictionary' if I got stuck on a word, but they're never to hard to figure out. :P

Oh, and Slaughterhouse-Five. That's a good book too. :)
