It had been the worst day to have planned an outdoor beach wedding.

Rain fell in thick, heavy drops from the sky. The beautiful waters, usually so calm, were in a tumult, tossing their waves and slamming their distressed arms across the sand. Dreary as the day was, it was yesterday that was to blame.

Evelyn did not believe it. How could she believe it. They could have gone on despite the storm. It might have worked. It might have been. . .

No, she hadn't believed a word that came out of her sobbing mother's mouth when she walked into the kitchen with the phone pressed against her chest. He could not be gone.

The roads were slick, her mother had said. It had only taken a split second for those slick roads to claim the his life. Him, thought Evelyn, my love, my life. Her fiance was gone. And she did not believe it. How could this be happening?

She remembered back to when she and Jesse had been in a big fight. They used to fight a lot during the transition stage between high school and college. Jesse had held her so tightly in his arms, her head upon his chest. "Ev," he had said, "we will make it. We will make it in this world because I love you. No matter what, I love you, and Baby I hope you never forget that."

He had given Evelyn a locket with their names engraved inside of it shortly after that fight. Life was hard for the young couple, but love alone pulled them through. Today was going to be the best day of their lives. But now there was only one of them left to live.

Early the wedding day morning, Evelyn woke up early. She pulled her dress over her head. Usually she need assistance to zip up the back, but not today. With meticulous care, she applied make-up and fixed her hair. A professional stylist was supposed to be here, but her mother must have canceled the appointment.

Evelyn slid on the satin white slippers. These slippers were her 'something old.' They had belonged to her mother. The bracelet she clasped around her wrist was something new -- a gift from her father. Her something borrowed was the lip gloss she had applied. She had borrowed it from her best friend for prom five years ago and forgotten to return it. For something blue, Evelyn took flowers from her bouquet and pinned them in her hair. Lastly of all, she fastened the locket Jesse had given her around her neck.

She walked the long, quiet trek to the beach. Rain pelted her all the way. Where were the cars, the tents, the flowers? Why was no one here yet? Perhaps she was early. Down to the beach she walked.

Upon arrival, she found that she was alone. So alone. Where was Jesse. Oh please, God, where was Jesse? He would never leave her like this. Never.

She looked around for him. She needed him now more then ever. Her heart, well, in fact, her whole body felt like it was crumbling to pieces. She needed to hold him, to feel his warm, beating, heart against her own. But there was nothing there to hold except for the cold, slippery rain that poured through her fingers, down her face. The sun came up above the raging waters and lit up Evelyn's face, streaked with water that had nothing to do with the falling rain.

"I love you," she whispered. "I love you," and she felt something deep within her die. It faded and withered within her, like the raindrops disappearing into the ocean depths.

That is so depressing.

Beautiful, though.
