I'm a member of the department down my street, volunteer, focusing on EMS. I'm wondering if there's anyone else here is a fire fighter, paid or volunteer. Or actually, a member of ANY service similar to fire fighting; EMT, Paramedic, ambulance rider, police, military.
I have two things to say to you. One; THANK YOU. No one can say that enough. You put your life on the line, for a lot of you voluntarily with no reward, every day. You run in when everyone is running away. Your work is appreciated, even if you end up not saving the building, you tried. And that's what's important.
Two; does your department do any moral stuff? Random cookouts, parties... anything like that? I just got myself the head of the Moral committee and I need ideas ._.
Anyone else; show your appreciation here. Tell stories or anything else you want to share. (:
Wow, I was hoping there was another volunteer firefighter/ EMT here. I've been in the fire department for almost 5 years and got my EMT-Basic last June. I'm going to school to be a paramedic. I'm also on a county wide rescue team that specializes in High Angle and Confined Space Rescues. I was supposed to go into the Navy, but I was medically disqualified from military service.
As for my department, we kind of do stuff, but not as often as we should. We have a duty crew everynight, and once a year, the company does something to say thank you for being on a duty crew. Also, every Labor Day, one of our chiefs does a pork roast at his house. He gets two full pigs and cooks them. We also have a banquette every year. I don't go to any of those because they are just an excuse to get drunk and I'm only 20 and our Chief is a cop, so I wouldn't be able to drink. If I can think of anything else we do, I'll let you know, but my mind is blanking
i was a firefighter when i was four or five :o
i have pictures of myself hanging out with a crew of firemen, wearing their hats with cuts (maybe burns?) all over my face. i used to be a little scared of the album a few years later, though, because i got queasy really easily. now i have no idea where the pictures actually are.
i might be a police officer of sorts, at least for a little while..i don't really know.
I don't think our chief would ever cook anything ._. we should see if someone could though, that sounds freaking awesome.
Brush fires suck. I live near some farmlands and they go up every once in a while.. and of course, controlled burns of the Pine Bush (bonus points to anyone who knows what it is and where it is!). But any help is good help, so I don't care if it wasn't officially, it helped. That's good.
