Today, I received my graduation present via Fed-Ex.

That's right. A brand new 15-inch Macbook Pro. I'm so EXCITED I'M BOUNCING OFF THE WALLS. It's beautiful!

But it's difficult! I've been a PC for SEVENTEEN YEARS! Anybody got tips for me? Make the switch easier?

This is the best thing ever. And for those of you in the OHOHO PC IS BETTER mindset, I totally agree with you. :) However, I'm going to art school next year, and they're like, Get a fucking Mac. So. :/

Two words: GOOD LUCK. I tried to go Mac, but like you I've been using a PC my entire life and I couldn't do it. xD I got so frustrated and lost. But people say if you stick with it then you'll get the hang of it. (;

Ooooh, Macs definitely are better for art. I'd like to have one someday, just for that. Not sure of any tips... I guess you could just explore everything and get used to it on your own, or search for a site that'll explain things to you. I took a computer illustration class in high school an had to get used to using a Mac... it wasn't that difficult, so I'm sure you'll get the hang of it. ;)

dayumm! nice gift right thur

i use macs at school, and i have to say, the interface might take a while to get used to. it generally feels a lot more streamlined and.. yeah.

i bet you'd get scornful glances if you brought a pc to art school :P best of luck!!

and if you ever get a craving for some old pc goodness, you could always install boot camp (not sure if that's what it is for mac) and it'll let you run windows separately. i think.

It's not super easy, but I'm getting the hang of it, haha. My best friend's a mac guy, and he's helping me out. :D

So what are you guys? Mac or PC?

Yeah, probably, hahah. But it really depends on what you're doing; for something things, like 3D graphics, it's actually better to have a PC. And apparently, the program you use for fashion design is only good with the PCs. Dunno.

Hm...I don't remember having any particular difficulties when I switched to a Mac, its really more getting used to things...like how you have to use the Command button instead of the control button. And yeah, since the larger share of the market is PC's, there are some programs that aren't Mac compatible. I love using a Mac ❤️ Once you get used to it, PC's are just so...clunky and unrefined.

It already feels like such a better OS. They way everything is set up, it's all so fluid. I never thought I'd be a Mac person, but I definitely like it.

It's just my entire internal database of shortcuts. It's all useless now, ahaha. I have to try and relearn them. (Or accept that they're not going to be something I can use anymore. D:)

I'm definitely a Mac guy now. Ever since I got the hang of it, my view on PC changed.

Some things about a mac piss me off but that's more with the desktops than laptops. There are a few things that seem pointless to me on that mouse! But that can all be changed in the preferences, I just don't do that cause it's school computers. Some things seem more difficult, like if you're viewing in folder mode and hit backspace, it doesn't go back a folder. I'm love my keyboard shortcuts, don't take them away mac D:

HIT um.. f12? f8? I forget but one of those keys when you hit it lets you see all the windows you have open. Which is useful when you're an artist.

Congrats on your mac though! I'm jealous. :P and yes you probably would have gotten at least some funny looks with a PC. Even my teacher told me told me to get a mac. Whenever someone says that though it's like.. wanna buy one for me then? XD

(: There's not much I can recommend. D: I had to learn by myself, and now it just seems to be common for me to use it. Like I don't know the keys or anything, just where they are? :x :/ (;

Ooh, congrats! :)

I have the older generation Macbook Pro. It didn't take me too long to get the hang of it; it's surprisingly intuitive! I feel like my productivity increased after I got my mac because it made work a tiny bit faster. I think of anything specific, but the best thing to do is to get a friend to show you all of the tricks and shortcuts.

Oh, and if you're ever missing a program that only runs in Windows, you can always install Windows on your Mac! I have Windows XP installed along with OS X.

(I disagree that one OS is better than the other, though; they're both good at different things.)

I never got the "Macs are better for art" bullshit. It's not about what you got, it's about the programs you use. "They're both good at different things" is ridiculous as well, the Mac is good at some things, the PC is good at those and much more.

Stijn, I think it's both about compatibility, since some of the best programs run better on different operating systems, and the workspace lends itself more to artsy fartsy nonsense. Plus the Apple aesthetic is always inspiring. (/barf)

That's the hardest thing right now! I have to learn to use my stupid thumb to hit instead of my pinky finger, and that's really messing with my head, haha. I'm hoping it'll just start to click after I mess up the ctrl+c ctvl+v enough. P:

O jeebus. Recently I've actually been considering making the switch from PC to Mac for study purposes. I've got the savings to just go and buy a Mac.. but I'm pretty scared of spending all that moolah, then not being able to adapt. xD

From the advice I've been given by friends and relatives in the industry I hope to end up working in, Macs are kinda the preferred thang, though. Owning one and being familiar with it before I start my course would probably be a good idea. :x

I've tinkered with them before as part of some of my units when I was at uni doing another course, but I found it really difficult to do ANYTHING. XD Not because Macs are stupidlameannoyingdumbdumb, but because they're just so DIFFERENT from what I'm used to.

I in fact.. couldn't even find the fucking POWER SWITCH to start the thing up. XD And then when we all needed to use the internets for research material, I was like.. WHERE THE FUCK IS THE INTERNETS? ...I was informed that Safari = the internets. I'D NEVER EVEN HEARD OF IT BEFORE.

Anyway. I wish you all the best with your pc-mac crossover, Becky. xD AND CONGRATS.. for getting chur Macbook in the first place. :D

Fingers crossed that I manage to make the same jump without too many hiccups. :x

That. Right there. That's why I've got it early, in fact. (I don't graduate for another month. D:) Since I'll have to be comfortable with it in time to be in college, I'm going to have to learn quickly. But it's true what everyone's been saying; adapting really isn't that hard.

Mythicurz, you should borrow a friend's for a while and see if you like it first. You already make beautiful things on a PC, ahaha, so I'm sure you'd be fine on a mac, but you never know. :o

They are pricey, that's totally true. If you buy one, though, go through the Apple store's student discount. Even if you're not really a student, you just pick a school. They don't check, and it knocks off a few hundred bucks at least. :/

/edt Oh! I missed this.

Yeah! I'm planning on dual-booting it eventually. I'd love to run 'em both, and since we have plenty of Windows software, I'll probably do that. My Zoo Tycoon CD-Rom isn't Mac compatible! :(

WELL YA, THAT'S ALSO PART OF MY DILEMMA!

The student discount would definitely be helpful. I can afford what I want/need as suggested by one of my cousins, but if there's a chance to save, it's always worth taking up.

Thing is, to claim it, I'm assuming I'd need proof of enrolment or something, which I can't get until I.. enrol.. obviously. xD BUT I WANNA GET PRACTISED WITH IT BEFORE I APPLY/ENROL ETC. Maybe even do a few random units at TAFE or something to familiarise myself with it.

OHWELL. ponder

It'll work itself out, no doubt. I'll just procrastinate for another month, as usual. XD!!
