So I was bored today, and started messing around re-drawing items to see if I could emulate the Subeta style.

Since I hope to apply for artist when I turn 18 in a yearish, tips would be awesome? I think you can tell which are mine and which are Subeta's, haha.
The items are and .

I actually really, really like your redraw of the caramel wig. The yellow isn't quite as invasive on yours and actually kind of looks blond, haha. However the little flip just over the headband looks a little bit too big/tall; perhaps if you made it wider instead of taller? Idk.
I think you'd have a pretty good chance, though. The line style is a little different; yours are quite a bit softer, so perhaps try doing the lineart in a harder brush?

I have Adobe Photoshop, and that is what I used to make the images - though, the 'softness' of the image, that's something weird that happened a little while ago. I always managed to get nice crisp lines with Photoshop, but somethinnggg changed, in either my tablet or photoshop, that makes them fuzzy-painty kind of. :(
I could try doing these in SAI. Hmm..
Thanks a lot for the input though! :)

I really like the drawings of the remade items c:
I like the crisp black lines. I think your shading is leaning towards soft shading instead of cell.. try using an opaque, hard edge brush. (Opacity=100%). Also, try to add color in your shading. For the official item, the shading gears towards green, not just darker shade of yellow.
All and all, I wish you the best of luck! (I am planning to practice subeta styled art after June, before my 18th birthday in December. c: )
good job! i think you certainly have a chance! keep practicing though, and by the time applications roll around you'll be set!
Hi there! I wish you the best of luck if you do apply in the future. :)
I'm going to echo what everyone else said in that your artwork is a little on the soft side. The majority of us use photoshop, so I will give recommendations based on my familiarity with that program. (If you are interested in using SAI, however, I know that uses that program for most of her art.) I personally like to use softer brushes while drawing, but sharpen before shrinking my images. To ensure that sharpening is applied to the entire image, however, I need to flatten the image before sharpening. Are you flattening the layers before you apply "shapen"?
I have a difficult time commenting on the bra because it's so dark that I only see two levels of shading: the base colour and the highlights. I find that the real-life black found in our clothing isn't a true black; more of a very dark grey. Perhaps you could try changing the base colour to a nice, dark grey that will allow shading to be visible? That will add more dimension to your work.
As for the wig: the lineart seems a tad thick in places, reminiscent of a lot of our older avatar art which has since been revamped. May I also ask which colours you're using for shading? It reminds me of my work before I was accepted as a staff artist, back when I used black and white on low opacities for shading and highlighting, respectively. My peers were quick to tell me not to do that, and my work has improved a lot since. I think you'll find your art will "pop" a lot more if you choose more varied, saturated colours for shading. The more subdued base colour you chose for the wig suits me more than the very saturated yellow of the current wig, but I'm not a fan of your shading, which gives the entire piece a dull, greenish tint. Pick some warmer colours to make it more lifelike, perhaps? Don't be afraid to explore with more saturated shading colours and think about lighting and colour temperature.
And, while redrawing existing wearables might help you emulate Subeta style, being able to come up with new and interesting items is key to being on the team. Perhaps you have some original items you'd like to show us? :)
This is a really excellent start, though!
Personally, I like the softness. It gives a different feel for the items you drew. It's different, and sometimes you just need to be different with stuff. I don't know... But I like it.
I think you do have a VERY good chance of making it as an artist. :D
Thanks for the input everyone. ❤
I draw for a different site currently with a different style, so it's a bit odd breaking into this one.
Darling: I don't really use Sharpen, and if I do, it is still fuzzy. I think I need to re-download Photoshop because the fuzziness won't go away no matter what I do.
Here, I tried to make something original in SAI:

The one on the left is sharpen-filtered, the one on the right is not. The sharpened one seemed... too sharp to me.

For the original item (which is adorable, by the way, very simple and cute), while the sharpen-filtered one might seem to sharp to you, when I look at it, it looks VEEERY similar to the overall Subeta style. The crisper/darker lines seem to be what the site goes for, while I personally know you normally do much smoother lines. They both look good, though~
