Every artist takes commissions for a reason. Whether it is for self enjoyment, for happiness of others, for practice, for experiment, or for money. I believe there is absolutely no reason for artists to tediously learn how to draw if not for one of those reasons.

I want to hear your reason, and your code for commissions in general.

What to include in an artist statement

 • Motivations
 • Commission Policies
 • Responsibilities
 • Rights
 • Goals

My artist statement:

Motivations:
I am motivated by self improvement since I was 7 to draw and paint, and I will continue to do so through commissions. Payment is a form of quantity control.

Commission Policies:
1.USD commissions must be prepaid, always.
2.I am easily irritated by harassment to finish a commission, but I&;m fine with WIP requests.
3. Do not change your HA if that is what you requested, save it on a host before you do so.

Responsibilities:

Time frame: I might delay due to a real life problem, but never an artist block or lethargy.

Deliver a finished image at least the quality of the sample.

If I experiment, the finished image must have better qualities than the sample.

Give WIP and updates

Patience

-Rights:

Communication. Tell me what you want, and what you need.

Artistic freedom over what you want while retaining what you need.

Understanding of delays due to real life

Receive payment as agreed

No personal attacks, while constructive criticisms are welcomed.

Goals:

Develop time management techniques (FAIL)

Anatomy, composition, perspectives, color coordination ect.

Working from descriptions and set standards (Preparations for a real job?)
4 Communications skills

Again, I am very interested with what everyone will come up with. c:

Well, I have never really have a problem with 99.9% of the commissioners, so I don't reallly have a long statement thought up. I guess I'll just type what pops along my mind as I go along.

[What is expected out of me]

 1. I will always try to give a reasonable time frame to my commissioner before I start on commissions.
 2. If I happen to have other things to come up and foresee that I will not be able to deliver the finished product by the said time, I will make sure I contact them before the date at least a couple days a head of time to let them know it will be delayed.
 3. I will try to get down as much detail as I possibly could, IF I can tell exactly what it is. If I cannot, I will try to ask, if I don't think it's something cluttered and un-needed, because I refuse to draw cluttered.
 4. I always show sketch stage to commissioners to let them make changes before I start lining for bigger pieces. I refuse to make grand-scale changes that affects the lineart afterward.

[What is expected out of my commissioners]

 1. References that do not leave imprints on my eyes after looking at it for 5 minutes. Nothing is worse than seeing dots because of the shitty color choice and contrast.
 2. Patience
 3. Eagerness to keep the communication as smooth as possible (I do not like to wait 2 weeks for your approval for sketch stage)
 4. Paying the amount agreed on (upfront payment for both USD/sP) + word of thanks. (Sorry, I dislike it when people just pay the amount agreed on w/o telling me what they thought of it. Did you like it? Hate it? Something at all?)

ah yes, I appreciate commissioners who comment back after receiving their pieces. c:

I don't have much problems with commissions except an occasion paypal problem or sudden disappearance of commissioners for a month or two, which leaves me hanging there. I want to write some guidelines down so my actions are not dictated by what I feel at the time. I will refer back here myself from time to tie ❤️

Oh, I forgot to add that I always expect commissioners to pay upfront for all commissions unless I know them realllly well. (For both USD and sP)

 • Motivations: It used to be for fun with profit on the side, but recently my mp3 player went through the wash and I'm scrambling for money. That little machine was my life. Not to mention, commissions forced you to draw and get things done, so sometimes it can help a person trudge through the viscous mud that is artblock.
 • Commission Policies
 1. You will pay whether you like the commission or not, and if there are minor mistakes concerning accuracy I will gladly change them for you (especially if it's a pricey commission).
 2. I do not avoid commissions. I give you a timeline, and if it's taking me longer than what I said I will always alert you.
 3. If it's a full color commission, I will send you WIPs if you choose.
 4. I agree with the HA thing, good god, one time I had a person who changed it every day D;
 5. No hassling with time frame, plz. Less stress=better art!
 6. Good image references also = good commission. The worse the image means I have to work harder, and that also means you PAY MORE.
 • Responsibilities
 1. Do minor editing if you request it.
 2. again, up to par quality with sample, I agree with you there~
 3. Again, WIPs, especially if it isn't just a sketch.
 • Rights
 1. References, dammit.
 2. Have patience with me D;
 3. Artistic freedom (againnn) especially if the references aren't that great. 4.again, payment as agreed (I am very imaginitive today)

-Goals

 1. current goal: money for mp3 player
 2. figure out a good way to friggen price things not to expensive..not too cheap D:
