Okay, so there're two things in particular I'd like recommendations for.

Firstly, romantic literature. Next year, our theme is going to be "Love Through The Ages", so I want to start getting some wider reading in now. It doesn't necessarily have to be classic.. if you enjoyed it, and think it relates, tell me!

Secondly, American literature. I'm definitely going on to do lit in Uni, and I'm currently considering doing an American Lit course due to a few books I've read and enjoyed before, but I'd like some extra ideas! Same goes for not having to be "classic".

Plus any books besides that you think should be read!

for a romance book i'd recommend The Pact by Jodi Picoult, this is one of the few romance like novels that I don't think is overly mushy. Second Glance and Salem Falls, also by Jodi Picoult, have a good romance subplot as well.

I don't have any suggestions for romance.

For American literature: The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck Ernest Hemingway (I haven't read any novels by him yet, personally) Slaughterhouse-Five by Kurt Vonnegut Catch-22 by Joseph Heller On the Road by Jack Kerouac

Those are all from the 20th century. I'm not too familiar with anything from the 1800s--maybe Walt Whitman? He was a poet, but that's about all I know.

second all the American literature mentioned :) also gotta add Charles Bukowski to the list, I liked Ham on Rye but any of his should do really.

For romantic literature try Wuthering Heights (Emily Bronte) I found it incredible. Um, not so sure for American literature, try John Steinbeck?

The Looking Glass Wars by Frank Beddor (I believe that's his first name)

The novel is and excellent spin-off of the original Alice in Wonderland. I think it is greatly written, suspensfull, and all around amazing. There's the evil Aunt Redd who decapitates people, little innocent Alyss lost in the real world, and catepillers that smoke hookahs and predict the future. The book itself is very fantastical, interesting, and wants you to read more.

There is website specifically set for the the novel, www.lookingglasswars.com, and features art, music specifically meant for it, and quite possibly a movie. I highly recommend it. You might find it to be quite enjoyable ;)
