I'm not quite sure if this belongs in the debate forum, but I thought I'd put it here anyway since I figured more people on this forum would have an opinion on this than on the debate forum. If it needs to be moved, move it...

My question for you anime/manga fans out there is this, do you consider anime/manga not created in Japan to be true anime/manga or just comics or cartoons?

Honestly, I think so long as it is animated, or put into comic book form without coloring, than it is anime/manga. I think to say that a series such as Dramacon (a hilarious manga created by Canadian Svetlana Chmakova) is not manga is stupid. It looks like manga, talks like manga, and acts like manga. It's even published by Tokyopop! (Actually Dramacon deals with this very issue that I'm discussing...)

Well, Tokyopop also publishes graphic novels, which aren't necessarily manga.

Aside from that, I do agree, since I consider Avatar a western anime. I also consider Peach Fuzz a manga, even though it was made in America.

Formerly: Leia-Chan, Vessalius, Touko.

Well everything animated would include American Cartoons so that doesn't really make sense. If it's in the Japanese style, then yeah it's anime. Anime describes the style of art.

As far as manga goes, just because it's in black and white doesn't make it manga. I mean, most of the comics in the newspaper are in black and white except for sunday.

Also Tokyopop is made of suck and fail. While there's nothing wrong with some American manga artists, the majority of them are terrible, and just trying to make money off of the recent popularity of manga. The art is so-so at best and the stories are terrible. An example. It's technically manga, but it's a piss poor excuse for manga.

I consider everything Asian to be anime/manga, while everything else are cartoons/graphic novels. XD

Comics are universal.

Mmm, I had a feeling I would be wrong in that. XD

Is there a special term for the other Asian nations as well, such as China?

From what I understand, the Japanese consider anything animated to be anime. Even Disney toons are anime. Anime is just short for animation. I personally refer to Japanese stuff as anime/manga and English stuff as comics/cartoons. This is just for clarity, since there's generally a difference between the styles and stories. That's just my preference though.

Well, technically the definition of Anime is a cartoon made in Japan. If it's not from Japan, then it can not be the definition of Anime. Manga is comic books from Japan. And only from japan. There are comic books from other countries, but they have different names. For example, Manhwa is comics made in Korea. Many bear a great resemblance to Japanese manga, but it all comes down to the place where the comic was published. Ever read Demon Dairies? You may find it in the same section where you find your manga, but it's a manhwa.

I second this. There is 'manga', what you call comics that origin from Japan, 'manhwa' is Korean comics and 'manhua' the same but it comes from China. So in that matter, there shouldn't be 'manga' that is created outside Japan, it's pseudo manga for me. Or comics. I don't consider calling it manga by their style, because after all, it is just a style, and there can be various "manga" styles, but they all seem to have something in common.

They're two totally different things for me, the art style, and where does the series come from.

As for example, I'd say that Svetlana Chmakova draws with a style that is based on manga, but she draws comics.
