semi-breakable items?

Guh, I'm not sure if this should go here or in the battle section, so if I'm wrong, please move this <3
Anyways, I just got a from the OD vending machine and I was going to equip it to my pet, but before I do that I need to clarify what "semi-breakable" means.
If it breaks during battle, does is it gone for good? Or does it only break for that one battle?
