...that you REALLY REALLY want to read, but every time you look at it, you get intimidated?
I really want to read the book Dune, as my brother has told me it's the greatest book on Earth for AGES, but it's tricky reading. I like it so far, but sometimes it just...intimidates me. :x
Maybe that's because it's the kind of book that makes your brain work. I don't know.
All I know is that I love it. but it scares me! :x
[edit]Hehe, I just noticed the Literature subforum...move it if you wanna. Oops. :(
I think I know what you mean. I feel that way about finally reading the Discworld novels. I've always heard about how brilliant they are, but it took some time for me to work up the nerve to start "The Color of Magic" ^_^;
I've never felt that way about a book. I always feel that you either like a book or you hate it. Either way you don't know till you've plunged in headfirst. I love books that force you to use your brain cells
I really, really want to read Ulysses and to finish Lolita, but they just seem to intimidating. Lolita is probably so intimidating because it deals with a rather sensitive and coarse topic. I started reading it, and it's good so far, but I just don't feel comfortable. The characters seem to distant, and Humbert Humbert is such a vivid unreliable narrator that it almost feels like he's standing there glaring over my shoulder as I read.
Then again, I think I feel that way about most of Nabokov's works. He's a good writer, don't get me wrong. But as intricate as his craft is, it's just...well, intimidating.
...
I'd really like to read a Stephan King novel one of these days, but I also value being able to sleep so...Dx
