Question about Gold Quill

I'm pretty new at battling so sorry if this is a dumb question. I bought a gold quill for my pet Castiel. Subetahq says it heals 40hp, but when I use it in battle, it doesn't do anything. My hp stays the same. It does say that it breaks and maybe I can fix it. Does this mean it'll only work when it doesn't break? Or am I doing something wrong?
Who are you fighting? Some challengers have healing disabled.
I tried it on a few challengers. Lizard Minion, Eclipse, and Pock, Saper and Riscors It didn't work with any of them

You are probably using it before you take damage. Your pet needs to be knocked down some health before it can heal you back up. Also if the npc hits you for for more then your pet's total health your dead before the heal is taken into account.
