Ragnarok Online ftw.
(and you don't have to pay a penny if you play on private servers~)
My favourite MMO is still WoW, even though I've played a few free MMO's as well it's just not worth it - if you want to be any good on those free things you'll have to spend money at some point anyhow if you don't want to be grinding for weeks. You'll be spending more money than you would paying for WoW too. ;P
As far as the free ones I've played go, here's a little list.
FlyFF - Repetitive and boring, at later levels you HAVE to always have a partner, be it a Ringmaster if you're not one (I played Ringmaster, Blade, Psykeeper and Ranger) or a DPS if you're a Ringmaster. It's also quite impossible to upgrade your gear unless you spend money on Spros - they were at about 6Mill each on the Lawolf server I played and still rising, I've been gone for over 2 years now though so they're probably more expensive now. ;D
ROSE - Again if you don't have friends to play with this will get repetitive and especially in the beginning you will die a lot unless you have a high level Muse on your side, which you probably won't. ^_^;
Perfect World - It's somewhat fun to design your own character when you get to change so many different things, but don't get your hopes up you can only change so much still. Moving around in the main town will lag you at a certain point no matter what, it's hard to keep people from attacking the same mobs as you and when they do it cuts your EXP significantly - questing can sometimes be a pain as well with all the people around doing the same quests. (there's lots of people around trust me.)
Rohan - Expensive, end of story - you cannot honestly hope to get anywhere unless you START by buying some ingame money with real life money and prices of in game money have risen since they've added taxes. U_U;
There, I hope it's helpfull.. xD;
Ah. I loved Raganrok Online. Perfect World is quite nice, I'm playing that currently. MapleStory was one of my favorites. But then I quit and when I checked back all my friends vanished. ):
No matter what MMORPG you want to play, you have to make good friends otherwise it'll get boring pretty fast.
AngelsOnline by IGG is my all time favorite. It's the first MMORPG game that I always go back to, and the people there are extremely nice. Maplestory is also okay, but I think that there are too many people there that beg non-stop. It's quite annoying.
I'm starting to fear that I'll never get over Sword of the New World. I loved every single thing about that game, other than its cash shop. The classes mechanics, boss fights, grinding, visual look of the world, the lore..I just adore all of it to no end.
I don't play it anymore because the community was awful and I spent a small fortune in the cash shop, but it's the MMO I measure all others against.

I have played several MMORPGs.
My most favorite is probably Everquest and Everquest 2. EQ in my opinion is really what put games like WoW on the map. So they do deserve kudos.
I currently play EQ2.
I have played:
City of Heroes City of Villains Lineage 2 Everquest Everquest 2 World of Warcraft Dark Age of Camelot Guild Wars
I am interested in seeing what Aion is all about right now though :)
My most despised MMORPG is probably WoW, I hate that game with a passion.
Dekaron/2Moons is pretty much the only one I can keep playing. It's not particularly great or anything, but there's just something addictive about it. I'm looking forward to Blade & Soul, though.
FFXI. I need more monies to support myself playing though. I tried RO, but could never get into it, and just never thought of touching WoW. A few of my friends play (WoW), but I've never had the chance to play with them. I never thought of myself as one to like PC/Online Games, but if I like RPG, MMO's should be right up my alley. I might look into more from this thread. c:
I love Guild Wars, Rohan and Fiesta Online ^^

Of course Flyff is an MMORPG. xD
I've played every single game mentioned in this thread. That's just sad.
World of Warcraft is, and probably always will be, my favorite. But I also love Ragnarok, RF Online, Perfect World, Requiem:Bloodymare.
Mabinogi seems to be the only MMO i've played that's not grind grind grind all day. All the others are boring.
Hello
I have lots of love for WoW :3 It's what I currently play. I also enjoyed FFXI as a game, but not so much playing with other people. It seemed really clique-y and everyone expected everyone else to already know everything. Not a very newbie-friendly community, IMO.
I have high hopes for FFIV (which will also be an MMO) and Diablo 3 :)
For free MMOs, I've only ever played Runescape, and I wasn't impressed. Spammiest game I've ever seen, and I got hit on by 3 different guys within my first 15 minutes -_-
