Hey cats and kids. I've been poking at this sketch for a while now and it's just NOT doing what I want it to do. Don't you hate when you can tell something's super-off about a picture you're doing and you just can't put your finger on it ...? Yeah. Me too.
I like Haruhi's (the girl's) pose as a whole, but something seems unnatural about it. I wanted her to look surprised, but her body language doesn't read that. As for Tamaki (the boy), he's much too stiff but I don't even know where to begin fixing him. I don't think I want him in profile but I'll work with that for now.
The swing is above a shallow pond, and held up by a tree branch. Feels like such a cop out to just not show the tree. Are they are any trees that plant their roots in shallow water? Not looking for geographical accuracy, so it doesn't have to be native to Japan XD I keep going back to weeping willows but I don't know if their branches could support a person ...
It's also going to be a night scene, with most of the light from the moon and fireflies ... which I guess makes it a summer scene hahah. I just wanted to draw something pretty XD
ConCrit is encouraged, and if anyone wants to redline I'd be super grateful!
Considering the fact that Haruhi weighs maybe 80 or 90 pounds, I think she'd be fine on that swing. Honestly, I see nothing amiss with Tamaki--his expression is very Tamaki-esque, I dig his smile and the pervy blush, and I don't think that he looks stiff.
I think the best critique I could give of Haruhi would be to tell you what I think her expression reads as per the current sketch. I think that currently, she's not surprised so much as... happily met unawares? Maybe I just don't see her blushing at Tamaki, maybe even looking a little ticked-off or exasperated, as per the anime?
But at any rate, it's a fabulous picture, and I super-super-dig both their poses. Also, I think the tree would just infringe on their festival of swinging + love, so it's not a cop out in my opinion ^^; You might want to post again when there are more background details though, to get more opinions on that.
