Hey
So, I have realized that on Subeta it is really ridiculously hard to find some real 'indie kids'. I am constantly on a search for new people to talk about music with...so if anyone is into some good indie rock, indie pop, twee, folky stuff, among others...post here! :D
I have a hard time listing bands that I really love but some of my recent favorites include:
Grizzly Bear Andrew Jackson Jihad Regina Spektor Animal Collective Deerhoof Belle and Sebastan The Do Final Fantasy Joanna Newsom Margot and the Nuclear so and so's The microphones Mount Eerie Neutral Milk Hotel Noah and the whale Voxtrot
among others.
Talk Indie!
I freaking LOVE Regina, BELLE & SEBASTIAN, .. and don't get me started on Final Fantasy. I love the song, "CN Tower Belongs To The Dead", the beginning is just so great.
Personally, I don't really get Deerhoof, I find the music hard to listen to, but thats just me. I have a friend who loves them.
I've heard of a couple of the others too, but don't really listen to them much. I have some of the Margot & The Nuclear So and So's stuff..
Grizzly Bear is pretty good too, actually.
Have you ever heard:
She & Him Shearwater Sherwood ..do you listen to Iron & Wine..? or do you listen to Fleet Foxes? Very folky, but some brilliant stuff there..
ugh animal collective makes me want to smash things. i also cannot stand joanna newsom. deerhoof is a ehhhh for me, i really don't like listening to just noise.
sunset rubdown and fleet foxes are probably my favourite indie bands. i also adore beach house.

Agreed on the Beach House.. never heard of Sunset Rubdown, will have to look them up.
As for indie music in general, I know I listen to independent artists, but I probably can't name which ones off the top of my head. I don't tend to care whether bands are on major labels or independent ones.
animal collective is pretentious indie shit imo. BUT W/E. i really like panda bear which is almost basically the same thing.
same with iron & wine or nmh. i only even like belle and sebastian on that list.
bmsr, why?, tussle, cocorosie, bird announced land, frog eyes, carissa's weird, casiotone ftpa, parenthetical girls, boards of canada, neva dinova, ariel pink, m. ward ummmm :P NOTWIST, RACCOO-OO-OON, OLD TIME RELIJUN, BEIRUT caps to signify super faves
hopefully this is ~~~real~~~ enough
lmfao, i figured thats what you meant. i mentioned that i like indie irl to someone one time and they said 'OH I LOVE OK GO!!!!"
ok..... go.. away
I ALMOST SAW COCOROSIE LIVE BUT THEY CANCELED :(
also i'm learning fuck this shit (belle and sebastian) on harmonica. it's pretty simple once you get acquainted with the harmonica itself.
FROG EYES IS SO GROSS, SPENCER KRUG HAS SO MANY NICER PROJECTS (sunset rubdown, wolf parade, swan lake in that order, frog eyes is on the bottom of that list imo :()
i do love beirut/boards of canada/cocorosie though i also enjoy tokyo police club

I LIKE FROG EYES OKAY I JUST DO i like their sound but i dont like sunset rubdown haaa but i sooooooo knew you would say that.
Yessss, I love when people get the Frank-n-Furter. <3 I wanted to buy a Chainsaw too but it was so expensive I was like "............OH WELL people will get the idea."
Yeah, some of their stuff is hard to get into, but they have quite a few gem pieces. I find you have to listen to it alot, and really learn the lyrics. The one made famous by Twilight is actually a really good song.. "Flightless Bird, American Mouth". Some people might cringe at Twilight, but I didn't even know it was a Twilight song until my friend saw I was listening to it on MSN and said ':O YOU HAVE THE TWILIGHT SOUNDTRACK TOO??' and I just said 'uhhhhhh what?' ... Totally clueless.
Yo, have you ever listened to Yeasayer? I just listened to their whole album and I really wasn't very impressed by it.. Update this thread when you find new stuff, 'cause I'm subscribed, kay? Always lookin' for new stuff..
ALSO - you should listen to The Magnetic Fields. Particularly, so far, I like "The Night You Can't Remember", "Blue You", and "Busby Berkeley Dreams". I kind of like "Zebra", too, although I don't know why, because there's accordion in it and it sounds almost too french, but its strangely odd, like most of their music. Once you get used to his voice... -stops talking about them now-
I'm not much of an "indie kid" and i'm not sure if these are both indie, but my iTunes says so! haha
Cloud Cult and The Dear Hunter so good <3 Dear Hunter just came out with a new album too. That's always exciting. And i'm going to see them on the 7th!
Dilapidated - Yes! I got it before it was officially released (: I love love love it. I totally have a weakness for Regina...but I wouldn't call her your little secret. The majority of people I've met know about Regina, even if they're not into indie or singer-songwriters. It's just that a lot of people don't listen to her older, more avant-garde music.
Poltergeist - The magnetic fields are some of my favorites. I love 69 love songs. His voice can be a bit obnoxious at times, but some of his work is just amazing.
I actually just discovered this lo-fi (ish) artist, Yonlu. He sounds somewhat like Elliott Smith at times but he did a lot of spoken word and strange stuff. He was a 16 year old boy from Brasil, I believe, who created music and posted it online. He committed suicide a couple months before he turned 17. They compiled his music into a CD and it's actually pretty great.
Oh? I'm curious - what do you consider 'indie'?
I suppose you're defining it as simply bands that are independent of major commercial record labels?
The thing about using that definition is that bands that I'm talking about do, in fact, fit that definition. The only one that doesn't do it so much is Regina...but that's pretty obvious.
