I was wondering if items like the book tapes and things like the notes from Masquerade and which can all be read to your pet can be used for the reading drive? They're not technically books, so I'm not sure.

Pretty much yes if your pet can read it, it can be turned in. Only things that cannot be turned in are the Tomes from the mage amulets.
