What is a good defense item for battling?

I'm new to the battling thing and I was wondering what a great item for defense would be? I have no idea whats what and how well anything works! Please & thanks :)

Defense items are pretty worthless if you don't have a huge pet, and even then they are situational.
The best defense it to just heal with Malevolent Grimfruit, Flame of the Red Rreign Staff, or any of the higher level Red RReign items.
