As part of a project for my ELA class, I have to connect my chosen dystopia book to a historical event.

The book I chose was The Postman, for those of you who have not read it, a basic summary is the world is in a post-apocalyptic state due to a leader, Nathan Holn, (whose ideas were similar to that of Hitler) who's followers began a string of wars, causing mass destruction and fall of government. A man lies about being a worker for the Restored United States so as not to be killed. Eventually he forms a small army and followers who fight against those who follow Holn. The people do not know the Restored United States is a lie.

I am having a hard time thinking of an event similar to this. I do not know much about history, and the only thing I have thought of is the Holocaust, because Hitler and Holn's personalities and leadership styles are similar. I offered this idea to my teacher but she said this is to specific and she would like it to be based more off the result of these wars and the state of America.

Pretty much after any major war the lands around are cratered ruins. Check out books talking about survivors post WWII or perhaps something relating to people struggling to survive any form of genocide. The Australian aboriginals, the Native American population, whole countries in Africa, the Romany, any one of those would have stories relating to the struggle to survive after one's world is decimated.

My first thought was atomic bombs as well. If you've ever read firsthand accounts by people who survived the blasts, it's really astounding how devastating it was.

I'm not familiar with the book so I'm not sure what angle you want, but the USSR under Stalin is also a pretty classic example of a 'utopian' ideal gone wrong--a leader promises certain ideals and turns to severe repression instead. North Korea is pretty blatant too.

It sounds like the book is about certain militant groups taking over after the government falls, so you could also try comparing it to real countries where this has occurred. Think of the DR Congo or Somalia, for example. It's not an 'apocalypse' the way we might think of it, but the lack of infrastructure, lack of effective government, and proliferation of militant groups bring it pretty close to what the book's getting at. Maybe do some quick research on failed states.

I thought of the atomic bomb as well, but there were other events during that time that had similar consequences.

I.e Socialism after the fall of the Russian monarchy. It was meant to be a Utopia for the masses, and it wasn't. The idea behind full communism being that the masses would rule themselves, in a perfect utopian society once the infrastructure had been established by the select few elected to be in power, and it never happened.

Any militant groups in history, i.e. the Genocide in Rwanda( early 90's, it ended in 1994,), the Congo, You may be able to also compare it to current events that are going on in some African countries currently, Sudan, for instance, Egypt( prior to the regime change, anyway)..

Granted, I'm not sure what angle you were going for since I'm not familiar with the book, but most of what I wanted to say was already stated by the previous poster before me.

Well, I'm not familiar with the book you mentioned, but as far as your story goes - if you want to have a lot of different things, perhaps you can also have climate change similar to what happened in America (and Europe) multiple times, with the last one being in the 1800s. Some people think this might be related to up rises in witch-hunting. Wikipedia

Figured I might as well mention it, since it was a bit of an apocalypse in its own right, nature can be freaking scary, annnd the fact that Hitler himself actually had a paranormal beliefs and apparently sent various people out to look for legendary artifacts or something - so it might not be too terribly far-fetched for your story?

I only know a brief plot summary of the book, but maybe the events surrounding the Aum Shinrikyo cult could have similar themes? They were led by a guy that claimed to be Christ, took hostile actions against society, predicted an apocalypse and they committed the Tokyo Sarin attacks to attempt to 'kick-start' said apocalypse.

Also maybe the Taiping Rebellion. Conditions were almost apocalyptic in how bad they were - famine and plague, hundreds of cities being destroyed and total war.

A little belated time-of-post-wise, but the Black Plague qualifies. Something like a third of Europe's population was wiped out.
