I volunteer with an amazing Pit Bull rescue group called Pit Bull Pride of Delaware (if you have facebook, come check us out and maybe give a like. We're 73 likes away from 18k!) In the summer of 2012, we got a pleading phone call about a pit tied to a pole in Wilmington. She had been left to die in the summer heat. Animal control turned her over to us with their blessing. She was heart worm positive and showed clear signs of being a former fighting dog. We named her Penny Sue. She was terrified of both people and other dogs. She recovered from the heart worm at a foster home and than the founder of the group took her in as a foster. The past summer, Lauren (the founder) noticed something wasn't right with her and took her to the vet and had several blood tests done. She was diagnosed with Babesiosis and was suffering. We quickly put her on medicine and she recovered.
In the past year and a half, she has become a loving and sweet dog. She loves to meet new people (we're still working on the other dogs) and makes friends everywhere she goes. She is truly a survivor.
Sunday afternoon, she was taken to meet with a family. We had our fingers crossed but we weren't holding our breath. And finally last night, Lauren made the announcement: Penny is going to be adopted tomorrow! The family she met with was a match made in heaven. I'm so happy, I'm in tears. I'm so thankful to be with this group that saves the lives of innocent pit bulls. Had it not been for us, she would have died tied to that pole. Dogs like Penny is why we do this. I know we can't save every pit but we save as many as possible. We take these poor dogs and make them into loving family members. In the 2 years this group has been around, we have saved 250+ dogs from the streets, high kill shelters, and abusive lives.

Now that you've had time to adore the sweet girl, let's hear stories about dogs (or other animals) you or someone you know has adopted. I love hearing adoption stories ❤
Oh gods, this is such a touching story I actually cried a little! And Penny is such a sweetheart on those photos, she's absolutely adorable. I'm so glad she found a loving family c': I'm afraid I don't have any adoption stories like that, though... The situation with animal shelters is simply horrible in my country, and I'd rather not talk about it in this light-hearted thread.
Oh how wonderful! I'm glad she gets a happy ending. She's a beautiful dog.
My adopted dogs don't have very interesting stories, but I used to have a sort of rescue horse. She was 29, nothing but skin and bones, super sway-backed. Her owner was calling people trying to find someone to take her, running out of options he contacted the owner of the barn where I boarded my other horse. She didn't want the horse but asked us and we took her. Her next stop would have been an auction where it is unlikely she would have found a good home. But we got her healthy and she lived a great life, making everyone fall in love with her, until we had to put her down at age 34. She was such a sweetheart, her name was Princess. She was actually a registered Tennessee Walking Horse. It's so upsetting that she was neglected and allowed to get into the condition she was in.

That is amazing. ❤️ We adopted our neighbor's kitten when I was in middle school. I don't know where they had gotten her from, but one morning my mom when to start the car to warm up and it was sitting on top of one of the front tires. She brought it up to the neighbors and they said they didn't want the kitten anymore. Horrible. So we took her in! Now I would say she's about 10 years old. Her name is Ginger and she is the sweetest most loving thing. She usually sleeps next to my head on my pillow at night. :)
Her eyyyyyes. dies a little She has such a sweet face. <3 I wish I could have a dog, but I've realized we can't, not with our cats. Every time we've taken home a possible adoption, the cats have reacted so negatively that we had to take the dog back. The last one was only last month and I'm still upset about it. I love my cats to pieces but I wish they'd tolerate a dog. I don't know if you're the one I talked to about this or not, but do you watch Pitbulls and Parolees on Animal Planet? Tia, she's amazing. You're lucky to work where you do. I wish I could find a paid position like that.
Thinking about it makes me cry as well. Sorry hear about the deplorable animal shelters in your country. That breaks my heart
That is so awesome! I'm sure a lot of people don't realize that farm animals can to be rescued as well. I'm sure she is an awesome horse. I want a mini horse when I get my own house with big yard.
Aw that's nice you kept her! It drives me crazy when people give away their pets (baby, adult, or senior). I understand things happen like someone loses their job and care barely care for themselves much less a pet, but that's really about it. And that's super cute. My sister's cat loves sleeping next to her head. One night, my sister went to bed and there was a toy mouse left on her pillow LOL. Than a few hours later, my sister woke up and turned the light on and her cat was just staring at her lmao. She was kind of creeped out.
I miss my dogs. They live at my parents and I'm about 30 minutes away. When I get my own place, I'm going to foster dogs so we can save more. And I don't want Pit Bulls and Parolees because I don't have Animal Planet at my house (we have the cheapest cable package).
My older brother, when he was little, found a litter of four kittens dying in the snow behind a friend's house. The momma was a stray, and they got caught in a blizzard. Only one of the kittens was still alive, and she was covered in bugs, pus, mud, and what have you.
My mom called a vet over, and he helped them clean her up. She was blind and deaf from exposure, and would have died had she been left out for any longer. She was so little (not weaned yet! my mom fed her milk through a wet napkin) that no one really expected her to survive, so they just called her "kitty."
Well, Kitty lived for 13 years before she died a natural death. She got herself into a lot of trouble since she couldn't see or hear, but she always ended up okay (if a bit shaken and wildly confused). For example, she used to run into things a lot since they liked to move our furniture around on her without thinking, lol.
Last Christmas one of our indoor only cats slipped out of the house. We were frantic to find him, because hey..Winter and blizzard was a-coming as well as the fact there are coyote-dogs in the area. Hours we spend, crawling under the porches, searching the garage and shed and woodline looking for Max. Finally the husband goes and gets the car, driving up and down the road for miles around thinking he might have gone that far and gotten run over. Instead of bringing home Max though, he returns with a tiny white kitten. He'd spotted her walking on the roadside and pulled over, she just sat down and waited for him to pick her up. Didn't fuss, didn't fight, just purred her little head off. She was spotless, no fleas, mites or even any dirt, pawpads really soft, litterbox trained and socialized to deal with other cats...her only issue was being deaf. We named her Noel and she's part of our feline family now. And happy ending part 2- We found Max later that night, he'd snuck around and hidden himself in the cat house on the front porch (which we had checked repeatedly during the many hours of searching). He wasn't super thrilled to have a new little sister but he's fond of her now and grooms her a lot. All of our kitties are rescues/foundlings but it just staggered us to think that somebody must have abandoned Noel on Christmas day for her to be in such good shape when she was found.
I'll have to check it out. Thanks. And sorry for the late reply. Work at been crazy the past few days
There's nothing real interesting about my baby girl's adoption story....I was in 6th grade and finally wore my parents down into getting me a kitty. We went to the local animal welfare and I saw her and her 2 brothers (she was the runt). I played with her while my parents went to do the paperwork and what have you, then we took her home. 14 years later and she still sleeps between my legs/feet every night I'm home. She's spoiled rotten and knows it and is such a sweet loyal girl (my cousin's 2yr old is now terrified of her because my baby was protecting me while I slept heh). I wouldn't trade her for the world!
Oh my gosh, I cannot even put words to how much I love this story. That is absolutely adorable, and it warms my heart to hear pro-pit bull stories! Congrats to dear Penny! That is so exciting to hear :)
As for adoption stories, although my dog passed away in February, today marks her "birthday" when we adopted her. This was 12 years ago when I was in the 3rd grade. I had finally convinced my parents to get a dog, and my dad showed me several pictures of dogs that would be at an adoption event at Petsmart. When he came across Chili's picture, I immediately knew that I wanted THAT dog. It was to the point where I begged Dad to call the shelter and request to not adopt her out until we got the chance to meet her the next day. By the next day, we headed to Petsmart. We got there an hour early since I was too excited and didn't want to arrive late. The store was PACKED with people, considering it was three days before Christmas. After the long hour, the adoption event began and the dogs arrived. The last dog to enter was Chili. Even though there were so many people, Chili pulled on her leash towards me and asked me for attention. I've heard the saying that people have a spark connection with the dog that they are going to adopt, and that definitely happened to me. Her picture was great, but I was sold once I got to meet her and she chose me out of everyone there. She was such a great dog. I miss her so much!
my goddd, she is adorable! i love pits, i don't know if i could work in a rescue but i definitely planning on adopting from one whenever i have the chance ❤ i imagine that at the right times it could be a really rewarding job, but i wouldn't be able to handle everything else..

My mom and Dad have an Animal Sanctuary and run a Foundation that raises funds for shelters and charities for dog rescues in Detroit (The Davinci Foundation for animals on Facebook)
They run campaigns on Facebook were for every like and share of certain posts a donor matches with either money or a bag of food, sometimes toys, to be donated to a shelter.
Right now they're doing the Santa Paws fund riser if you want to check it out here .
