Hey everyone!

The forums homepage now has an All Activity section at the top showing recent posts across the site. The idea is to make the forums feel more alive - instead of just seeing a list of forum categories, you can immediately see what people are talking about.

Filter Tabs

  • All Activity - Recent posts across all forums
  • For You - Based on your subscriptions and frequently visited forums
  • Staff Posts - Catch up on staff posts quickly
  • Subscribed - Topics you've subscribed to
  • My Topics - Threads you've participated in

Scroll down past the activity to browse forums by category like before.

Let me know what you think - does this make the forums feel more alive?

Overall: I don't mind the idea of this, though I personally feel like I will still go to the actual forums/subforum categories to view threads because it's easier to follow a whole conversation that way. -(This is off topic to this exact feature, but speaking of following conversations, one thing kumos is sorely missing is the able to jump to the last read post on a thread. Nor can you jump to simply the last post or see if you have already posted in a thread. I haven't been using the kumos forums in part because of these missing features.)

One bug I noticed: In the activity feed, the hovers on usernames are not for the correct user after the feed has updated (the username changes, but the hover remains for the user who initially was in that spot in the list.)

And 2 comments about the layout:

  1. The activity feed is too big at the moment, I think. On my small laptop screen it takes up the entire screen. Also, because it takes up the whole screen and is a scrolling box, it becomes ever so slightly harder to get to the actual forums. -(Again a little off topic, but the same has become true of viewing a forum category: the forum info, subforums, and pinned posts often take up almost the entirety of my screen.)

  2. The light grey font on both the activity feed as well as much of the front page of the forums is too low contrast against the pale colored backgrounds of any of the light themes. It makes the text hard to read in the sense that my eyes want to just glaze right over that information to look at the bolder colors of the HA headshots, forum category images, or even the paw icons next to usernames. -(Also, again off topic but similar, but the rest of the front page aside from the activity feed is using a smaller font than any of the rest of kumos and that also makes it much more difficult to engage with.)

Also, two more separate forum things that don't feel like they'd be worth making a new post for:

  1. On boards, HA images are being squished just a little bit - they're being displayed at 116px wide but their actual width is 125px.
  2. On any given forum, where it's supposed to display when a thread was posted, it is instead duplicating the date of the last post. -(As an aside to this, I think at a certain point the dates shown in forum categories should switch from "xx long ago" to the actual date so it's easier to tell exactly when a post was made.)

Seems more cluttered/busy, to me, feels a bit like walking into a room and being hit with a wall of noise.

The activity box takes up a massive amount of screen space forcing me to scroll much more to get to the actual forums. Add to that, if I select a different category/tab I know will be smaller, it doesn't remember that choice if i navigate away from, and back to, the page, so I get the giant list again.

I have custom css to hide the forum feed on legacy because it's annoying and full of things I, personally, am not interested in. The feed on kumos appears to be within a generic section container which will make this much more difficult, or potentially impossible.

Please let us choose whether we want to see the activity feed or not (toggle switch, make whole thing collapsible and remember the setting, something).

  • I really liked this change - on mobile the feed is large and clear enough to see the different posts and made me feel like contributing more.
  • Does feel more alive, can see the face peoples HAs, when a post was made etc.
  • It reminds me a bit of the shoutbox.
  • I like seeing the face of people's HAs in the box.
  • It did not feel like I had to scroll too much to get to the specific categories - just one finger length.
  • It looked pretty good on desktop too.
  • The For You section had my frequently visited topics in it! so that works
  • the font and format under the 'Browse Forums' section is a bit hard to read and navigate esp in comparison to the new activity feed on mobile
  • the staff posts section is showing some stuff regular users dont have access too, this is a bit cluttering - e.g. CD quotas?
