Got my new computer, but I'm looking for stuff to keep her updated, safe, and clean. I've set her up a few times and fallen head over heels for her, but similar to old family computer she still needs a micro sd card to help backup all her files and a good anti-virus protection.

So small details about my computer. She was made by GMKtec and she's a cute little mini blue computer. I named her "Eva" after the family computer EMachine. I couldn't think of a short G name for a female.

My family has always bought McAfee for the old computer, but I was thinking about buying Norton for my computer.

I've heard most people now are starting to buy SSD (Soild State Drive) to back up their computers, but I've been using micro sd cards for years. To me they are much easier to keep that the SSD since the sd card stays inserted inside the computer. My family has always use SanDisk on all of our devices computer, phones, tablets, and handheld consoles.

@-HyperBlossom- [url=https://www.reddit.com/r/antivirus/comments/1h7w9zn/a_good_completely_free_antivirus/]always worth looking into free alternatives, if you don't have to pay then absolutely don't, yfm?

also use malwarebytes for periodic scans.

and congrats on the new compy!!

I'm sorry for the late reply. I have no clue why that @ doesn't work with my username 100% of the time. I do understand what you're saying with "free" alternative, but to me I feel a bit safer buying a software to protect my computer and the information that's on it. All of this ransomware, hacking, password stealing, and etc has me super worried to have a heart attack.

Thanks again, oh and you have any input about the sd card or SSD to backup the computer?

Macafee is good, I always felt that Norton was more about advertising what you don't have then being helpful.

I do suggest an old school scanner called Spybot Search and Destroy. I've been using it sense Highschool (Nearly 20 years at this point) and it's been very useful. It works best with a back up virus scanner, however AVAST always disables it, just a heads up- if Avast is even still around.

(sorry for the late reply. Cleaning up the house for Christmas) my family and me have use McAfee for years and I do trust them alot, but you know over years hackers learn new tricks, viruses get more difficult, ect, which makes this harder to choose which plans. McAfee has a 1 year plan for $30 and Norton has a 1 year plan for $50 (both these plans are on sale thanks to it being the Hoilday season) my problem with that is both their plans have different types of protection and the anti-virus doesn't come on those plans, so I would have to choose something much higher.

I was thinking about changing over to Norton since in their plans they do protect against AI, ransomware, and other things far beyond my control.

I will be looking into this SpyBot Search and Destroy. Also you're right about the ads. I see commercials all the time about Norton. I've never seen a commercial for McAfee in years. I remember seeing them when I was a little girl.
