SO after considering it for the last few years, I decided to take the plunge in March to become a mortician/embalmer. I've lived in TN my whole life and luckily the only mortuary school in the state is located in Nashville, which less than 30 minutes away. I toured the campus and made my mind up to start working towards my associates degree in mortuary science! They have an online option, so that's the program I'm taking.

ABOUT ME Straight out of high school, I went to a four-year college and initially decided to go for a biology major because that was the subject that interested me the most in school. I ended up switching to an English major (writing concentration and communication minor). Over a decade after graduating, I haven't done anything with my degree. I figured that so long as I could find something that involved writing, I would be satisfied but never had anything specific in mind.

I've been working in a children's hospital for over three years now. My friend's mom referred me for a position in the department where she works and I managed to land the job even though I had next to no medical experience. I had a really hard time with the job when I first started, but I stuck it out and I'm glad that I did because I'm better off for it now. I have a lot of down time at my job so I'm able to study for my classes while I'm at work.

I figured I'd pop into the forums today and see if there are any morticians or embalmers here on Subeta! I'd love to pick your brain about your personal experiences and ask for any advice for someone about to enter the field of death care. I should be finished with school next fall. I was able to carry over several credits from my bachelor's degree, so I don't feel like I completely wasted my time going to college. Now that I'm in my second semester, I'm getting into the good stuff of the program! Got my first embalming textbook, that was fun to flip through.

Still haven't seen my first corpse yet, though I'm not worried that when I do, I'll immediately be scared off. I'm sure it's a bit of a shock the first time, but I grew up helping my dad field dress and process deer. I'm not squeamish and what really drew me to this field is a desire to work with my hands and to be able to take pride in the work that I do AND have it matter/make a difference for people. I've never really had a calling in life but I truly feel like I've found what I was meant to do.
