I don't know if this is at all feasible, but perhaps when an account is closed you might take the items from their shops, galleries, wardrobe and vault and have an auction?

I agree whole hardheartedly, because they may be holding items like pumpkin fries in limbo. That, and I know many subetans need to finish the last edible to their pets. Myself, being one of those subetans who need the pumpkin fries. This would be a creative and fun way of getting items we need.
Thanks. It's really sad to think of all the items just hanging in limbo.

I just saw another item hanging in limbo today. So hopefully they decide to do your suggestion.
Here's hoping!

I hope they do, looking for the solution you came up with.
I have a feeling people would jump at the auctions.

Oh I believe they will happy to have a chance to get a much needed item.
I'll check here again tomorrow. For now, I'm off. Good night.

no?? definitely not?? it's one thing to buy an item from the shop of a frozen user at the price they were already selling it for; but to take their private, personal items out of their account would just be stealing.
frozen users can become unfrozen. users can self-freeze and then come back and reopen their accounts. if they didn't get rid of an item or put it up for sale beforehand, it's safe to assume they wanted to keep it, so if they ever come back, it had better still be there.
it doesn't matter if they have something rare or limited that you really, really want. when items become scarce like that, they can be re-released via other means. in fact there is an entire suggestion thread dedicated to that exact thing: Items To Put Back Into Circulation
i have to agree with - if a user is definitely done with the site and absolutely intends not to return (which isn't always the case even with freezing - i know some users who self-freeze and will reactivate their accounts later when they want to return), they can just donate all of their items or give them away if they so choose, so i don't see the value in having a system that automatically removes them after a time period. it just seems like a good way to discourage players from returning at all if there's a threat that their account would be completely empty.
like account username clearing is one thing (not that it seems to work anymore :U but i digress) but i think items are a bit far, especially when there's other ways to reintroduce items into the economy as required. like i'm not saying i don't occasionally yearn for like old capped and retired cws probably sitting on unused accounts, but removing items from people is just something i don't think is right to do. ultimately it's their stuff to do (or not do) with as they please!
like i guess the only thing i would think could work would be a setting where a user is choosing to abandon an account, there's an option in the self-freeze menu to automatically donate their items or something, but i don't think mass donating is actually that difficult to do manually anyway so it doesn't seem necessary.
Yyyeah that's a big no from me. : | This would unleash a whole new level of vulturing that I absolutely do not want on the site.
If this became a thing and I was forced to take a long break, only to come back to half of my things being missing? I'd delete the rest, then quit and never come back.
No one should get dibs on the things I've worked hard to earn just because I'm unable to play for a while. If I want to give them away, I'll give them away. If you want more of a specific item (or items) in circulation, linked to a thread that's used exactly for that purpose.
This also leaves an incredibly bad taste in my mouth because there are inactive accounts of users who have passed away, both ones the site was made aware of and preserves in memoriam, and those that just say "inactive". Just... no.
the can of worms that this would unleash would be wild, especially with CWs and clauses put under them. don't even want to think about that headache. as others have said, it sucks to see rare items on frozen users, but we've been a part of many giveaways, and when folk leave the site for good they are so, so generous and kind in giving out items.
amber recently did a chaotic token shop and rereleased some books that folk have been asking for. this is a more engaging and rewarding way to gain items you seek, not pick them from accounts that neither you nor the subeta team would feasibly be able to tell if its abandoned.
the idea proposed feels so invasive and intrusive and a little disrespectful tbh, especially with the assumption that folk would jump to the auctions.
you never know what circumstances life will throw at you, anyone could be drawn away from subeta at any reason. it's bad enough losing a username, but to have what is essentially vultures circling overhead is ..yeah. piling on with the no's, and thirding 's idea of simply asking for more in circulation. much better and cleaner solution.
Good points all. I didn't mean to upset anyone, I was mainly thinking of all the defunct profiles out there, people that have been gone for years and show no sign of ever coming back.

Even with profiles that have been inactive for years, you don't know if the person will come back. No one does. I've seen users return after 3+ years of inactivity because they remembered the site exists and they wanted to play again.
Returning to your stuff being gone would be a huge slap in the face. Active users should not have the option to pick someone's account clean just because they feel like they have the right to those items because they play daily, and that inactive person does not.
I think rereleasing now unobtainable (non-CW) items is a good idea, but not taking them away from inactive or frozen accounts. my account was inactive when I came back after over a year, and I would've been so upset if any of my items were gone just because I got too busy to log in. especially when I have put in real money and time ;-; usually if someone never wants to come back, they would do a giveaway or sell their items to buy art they can keep forever, etc. I just think it would be very disrespectful to auction off someone else's hard work without their permission :/
we for one arent upset, but as said, folk can take a long hiatus or forget the site exists. they probably already need to deal with username/pet names being swiped, but having your items yoinked too? we recently returned to gaia after a hefty 15 year hiatus/forgetting the site/email and passwords. got so many memories on that account that if gaia would of cleared it we would of lost so many precious memories from folk who are no longer in our lives.
again to reiterate, no one can know why an account is abandoned, but even if it's been years and years, there is a probability of them coming back, and those are their items. would be even worse if the user had ended up passing away, their legacy tarnished by folk waiting at their accounts doorstep for an item they had held to drop.
no matter which way you swing the idea, it's in bad taste. it's best to just ask for a rerelease, or seek someone to sell it. taking from inactive accounts is not the way. there is still a person behind the account, let's not get blinded by items they hold.
This site has enough vultures, imho.
No.
(And no, I'm not calling anyone names, mods, I'm just stating the notion reminds me of what my real life aunts have done multiple times after multiple real life deaths wherein things just straight up went missing and oops, oh, well. I don't want that here.)

This was obviously not a popular idea, so I see no need to keep reading the same point over and over again. Locking this topic.
