I'm sure I had at least 10 pets before. I now have only 6. Were they removed from inactivity?

pets don't get removed for inactivity. the only way for pets to leave your account is for you to abandon them or transfer them to another user. so either you did that before your hiatus and forgot, or your account was compromised and somebody else did it.
i'm not 100% sure, but you might be able to file a ticket and see if staff have any records of any of your pets being abandoned or transfered, and when those activities would have occurred.
You can check if you were transferring pets out under pets tab and selecting transfers. But otherwise I'd do as said a draw up a ticket and see if anything else happened
FINALLY GOT THE 15K WARDROBE DONE!!!!! Next up gutting and selling it.
